T'bird - sort order of messages

| I like to view newsgroup messages sorted by thread subject with the
thread not expanded. I have T'bird's "view" options set up accordingly.
But whenever I download unread messages, the display does not follow
this preference. Is there a setting in any of the config files that will
force this order so that I don't have to respecify the "view" settings
every time I go to a newsgroup?

I don't use Thunderbird for news anymore but the tabs just above the
headers on the left and right will get you there.
