Author History disappeared in middle of session, Firefox would not restart after closed

In the middle of a browsing section where nothing unusual had happened
and I hadn't messed with any settings, I noticed the autocomplete
feature no longer worked, and my history file was gone. I shut down
Firefox (1.0.4) and attempted to restart it. It appeared in the Task
Manager, but never brought up the screen to choose a user.

I could have rebooted, and see if that cleared things up but since I
was rebooting anyway, I ran Norton Go Back, and rolled the computer
back 2 hours and it seems o.k.

But the question is has anyone else ever seen this - is it a reported
happening/bug? Losing the history file would be inconvenient, but
clobbering the program would be much worse.

I should add, that prior to this ocurrence I installed Sun Java 1.5
plugin - just in case there is some known problem there.
