Is there a way to get Thunderbird to read all newsgroup yenc files (I
can only read about half of them, the rest are just strings of text) and
is there a way to combine binary files that have been posted in pieces?
I've serched the mozilla home page and can't find any answers.
TIA

For downloading and decoding multipart yEnc files you'll be better off
using a dedicated news reader like Xnews (http://xnews.newsguy.com/).

But if you must use Thunderbird, see

Roger that. There are much better dedicated binary news readers than
Tbird.

I like BNR2 or BNR3 www.bnr2.org (it works across multiple servers
and groups - find a cross posted music or video file and it can suck a
complete file from cross posted fragments. Ditto if you have access
to multiple servers.

Power Grab is pretty good was www.CosmicWolf.com the site is dead but
it may be in a freeware archive somewhere.

http://slyck.com/ng.php?page=3 has bunches of newsreaders and their
reviews, and info on how to decode rar/par files (which is what you'll
be using if you download video). They also give some pretty good info
on file sharing progs. (another good source of videos and music - but
with more pitfalls)

Follow the links to Internet > [Newsreader: Binary Download Client]
from www.pricelessware.org for some more stuff. The priceless ware
site is a good resource as is alt.comp.freeware for a lot of free
software. Post what you want to do and someone will likely have a
freeware progy that will do it. Pricelesssware.org is affiliated with
alt.comp.freeware - picks the best freeware for the year in various
categories from alt.comp.freeware.

Sounds like you're just getting started on binary groups . . . there
is a small learning curve, but the rewards are worth it. Search for
an FAQ on the groups you're interested in - usually under a major
heading (for instance you want alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.jazz, there is
an faq for alt.binaries.sounds to cover it)

You got a taste with Tbird, but that's only a taste.
