Author Firefox is unusable for me, keeps locking up - on and off

I tried Firefox several months ago but it locked up for about 15
seconds at a time. I tried uninstalling and re-installing, which
didn't make any difference so I went back to Opera.

After constantly hearing how good Forefox has become, I recently tried
again with the latest version 1.5.0.2 but disappointingly it is still
totally unusable for me.

While browsing, the mouse pointer turns from a pointer to the typing
symbol you get when entering text. Moving it over any icon or link
produces no change. Then after several seconds, the mouse pointer
turns to the egg timer, the title bar dims and the miniature program
icon in the top left corner of the title bar goes white. If I click
anything during this time I get "not responding" in the title bar.

If I wait about 10 to 15 seconds the pointer returns and I can
continue browsing but the same thing just keeps happening throughout
the session. No pattern can be observed but it's fairly regular.

Any ideas what could be going wrong? I have no problems at all with IE
and Opera.

Try turning off Find as you type

[Firefox-->Preferences]*-->Advanced [General]

UNcheck Begin Finding when you begin typing

Does that help?

*varies by OS
Windows
[Tools-->Options]
Linux
[Edit-->Preferences]
Mac as above

you might have a conflict with another application installed on the
machine. try a little spring cleaning, maybe you will get lucky.

I closed down all other utils like Mailwasher, NOD32 etc but the
problem persists. It can't be a setting on Firefox because no setting
would ever be designed that would make the product unusable.

The pattern seems to be that I open a fresh page, after several
seconds the mouse pointer stops changing to a hand when hovering over
links and I can't scroll up or down or click links. If I try to click
a link the page freezes and I get the egg timer. After about 10
seconds or so the mouse pointer returns to normal and I can continue
browsing but very shortly after the whole thing repeats itself so
Firefox is totally unusable.

Okay, but with your editing you removed the original context of the
message and I dont recall what your specific problem is anymore. It may
be familiar to you (after all it is your problem) but it isnt to me.

I'm not getting lock ups, I'm getting daily crashes.

This is a problem that arrived when I updated to 1.5.0.2.

It could be an extension. Is there any way aside from uninstalling them
one-by-one to track the cause of my crashes down?

Why uninstall? Open the Extension Manager from Tools, right click on
each one and disable them.

But first, make sure it is an extension. Have you tried starting FF
in Safe Mode. Doing this will disable all extensions and from there
you can test things out. If things work in safe mode, then you know
its an extension and you can disable them from there.

Sorry, I thought post where always shown as complete threads. It's
just that one of the biggest annoyances on NG's is people who don't do
any editing and you have to scroll through loads of rubbish.

Here's my original problem

I tried Firefox several months ago but it locked up for about 15
seconds at a time. I tried uninstalling and re-installing, which
didn't make any difference so I went back to Opera.

After constantly hearing how good Forefox has become, I recently tried
again with the latest version 1.5.0.2 but disappointingly it is still
totally unusable for me.

anything during this time I get "not responding" in the title bar.

If I wait about 10 to 15 seconds the pointer returns and I can
continue browsing but the same thing just keeps happening throughout
the session. No pattern can be observed but it's fairly regular.

NOTE: Firefox works fine on my laptop, with a wireless network
connection to my broadband, so I can rule out any connection problems.
I can also add that a couple of other programs have similar problems
so it looks as though it may not be Firefox at fault. However, Opera
and IE work fine.

I'm absolutely no pro: I had a workstation that indicated it had two
processors and this happened to me. I know this isn't much help, becasue
I do not remember the fine points, but essentially you have to tell
Firefox which processor to use. Maybe here:

"One of the biggest annoyances on NG's" are people who don't leave
messages intack.

Not everyones system is set up as you have. Not everyone is set up to
view threads. Some are set up to view NEW MESSAGES only, and nothing
else.

I've not heard of that despite using newsgroups for 10 years. Every
newsgroup post I've ever seen is in a thread, even when using a
browser & Google groups the threads are archived in tact.

I don't usually snip the paragraph I'm relying to though, that was a
one off. I'll be more careful in future :-)

I didn't say that.

I said that not everyone's newsreader is set up in a threaded mode.
Some people couldn't careless. They just want to see the newest
messages and nothing else.

When you installed Firefox, did you create a new profile? Have you tried
creating a new profile to see if the problem exists there?
