Author Editing response in Thunderbird

This is a hit or miss deal. Sometimes I can edit (delete) parts of the
original message and sometimes I can't. What is going on here? How do I
enable editing of the original post on a consistent basis?

I've never experienced that ever.

Mind you all of my emails are in plain text format. Are you quoting
HTML coded-stuff perhaps?

Nope, plain text. I am not quoting anything, but trying to delete excess
information in a reply.
