I've been running into a real stumper of a problem with Firefox lately.
Every so often my bookmarks just up and vanish for reasons I
cannot discern. They'll be there when I power down and gone when I
power up the next day.

I took the liberty of making a backup of the bookmarks on a floppy.
They work fine if I use the links on the floppy, but it will not allow
me to import them back into the main machine. The input selector box
appears but it is otherwise blank, showing no choices. Usually I just
click to the sites on the floppy and rebuild it, but
the import-export thing is not cooperating.

What is causing this to happen, and how can I prevent reocurrences?

Firefox makes a backup of your bookmarks automatically. The next time
this happens, go to your profile folder and look for a folder called
bookmarkbackups. Inside it, you should find backups from the last five
days. Open the most recent in the browser and see if it is correct. If
so move into the root of the profile folder, and rename it to
bookmarks.html.

No one really knows why this happens, and, more importantly, why it
never happens at all to most people. See here for a discussion, and some
ideas as to what you can do:

First, close the program. Take a look at the bookmarks.html file and
make sure its not marked read only.

Also, look in your profile for things like bookmarks.bak or
bookmarks.temp, or bookmarks.moztemp, or something similar. If you
see any, delete them.

Restart FF. Does it work now?

Thanks to all that answered. I did find the backups and have placed them
in the PROFILE folder.

Thanks again.
