Mozilla and all other linux browsers fail to follow links to
a specific page of a PDF file.

http://www.url.xxx/gub.pdf#page=24

Most peculiar, since they can do footnotes.

http://www.url.xxx/gub.pdf#24

I don't care whose fault it is. It's a *bug*, it's a missing feature,
it's *not* ok. daveA

Missing feature perhaps, not a bug.

Since Mozilla doesnt read PDF files natively it depends on your assigned
PDF viewing plugin (if you have one) or pdf mime type file handling program.

For example, both of your links just get me to a Open DNS listing page
and I am on a Mac, not Linux.

I dont know of any browser that reads PDF files natively, tho most can
utilize the Adobe plug in

By "all other linux browsers" what do mean? Are you including Konqueror
in this?

If you are talking only Gecko based browsers, you might have a case for
calling it bug, though, being PDF related, I kind of doubt it. If its
all browsers, including non gecko browsers, its not a gecko bug.

I use Foxit Reader and Firefox will not open it. I just get yet
another "missing plugin error message". In order to access a PDF I
have to either save (download) the PDF. or use another browser.

That's Foxit's problem, not Firefox. Indeed, I believe they have solved
it with Foxt 2.0, which is supposed to work as a plugin in Firefox.

I'm a Mac user, so I can't give specifics, but take a look at the Foxit
forums:

I doubt it would be a gecko bug; doesn't the Acrobat plugin do its own
rendering?

I am not certain if the Adobe plug in is even available for Linux, it
isn't for Macs.

It seems that Adobe has hopped back into the Linux market and now once
again offers a full up Linux version replete with plug in. Version 8 is
said to be coming soon - until then version 7 will have to suffice

On the mac, shareware/freeware developers stepped up and filled the gap
providing a free 'read only' mac plug in. Even then we can't annotate a
PDF file directly from the browser - we have to use the Adobe Reader for
that and thats a helper application set up, not a plug in.

Yes, it has been since the Netscape-4 days, maybe earlier even.

Acrobat 7 on linux is a huge resource hog, and doesn't support DRM'ed
pdf files. I prefer using xpdf on linux, which can be used as a Firefox
pluggin via Mozplugger.

Then NO browser is ok by you. ALL browsers need the Adobe plugin to read
PDF files. Install Acrobat. Its free.

Reading the files has nothing to do with it.

No, there's evince, gv, xpdf, and others that read pdf files and mozilla
uses one in windows which can follow the link, but mozilla in linux
can't.

Acroread you mean. I am told it doesn't work either. daveA

Konqueror is a completely different rendering engine. It is clearly not
a Gecko bug.

Web browsers do not read PDF files anyway. They are dependent on your
pdf viewer. If anything, the bug is there.
