connection timed out
|
|
| Bryan Jones 2007-04-20, 1:13 pm |
| Just installed the latest Thundebird and configured it to send and
receive emails OK. But, I keep getting this message 'Connection to
server mail.yahoo.co.uk timed out'
I have checked the help pages which referred me to
Options/Tools/Advanced and to click on Config edit, unfortunately there
is no such button.
I should be most grateful if anyone could help me get rid of this
message.

[Thunderbird-->Preferences]*-->Advanced [General]
<Config Editor...>
*varies by OS
Windows
[Tools-->Options]
Linux
[Edit-->Preferences]
Mac as above
So, select the window Advanced in preferences (or tools options)
ensure you are looking at the [General] tab
and the button will be there at the bottom on the right

Thanks for the advice. I have tried this, plus more, but still get the
same message.
The only good thing is that by clicking on the 'connection timed out'
window and clicking on get post I can still receive my messages. It's
just a question of eradicating the annoying pop-up.
I have tried altering the number of seconds in the config tab of options
to zero, which hasn't altered anything but I would like to know what the
usual setting is.

The usual setting is 60 which can be found in tools>options>advanced>
network and disc space.
Have you tried another mail client to see if that works ok?.If it does id
uninstall thunderbird (including removing thunderbird application data)
And reinstall afresh.I have no such problem accessing pop yahoo uk mail
from thunderbird2.If the alternative client gives you the same results id
check firewall or router settings such as MTU size

| I get a similar message with some websites I want to visit. You are right,
it is a very annoying feature. Hope we get some solution to it.

But in my case it happens every single time I try to access emails or
newsgroup messages and, I usually have to click on the pop-up window
twice to get rid of it.
If you do hear of a solution then please let me know.

Well I've tried all sorts of different timings, but it makes no
difference.
I am using Turnpike which connects and downloads emails and ng messages
perfectly, but it is getting a bit long in the tooth now. E.g, it
doesn't display graphics which is somewhat limiting.

Until the answer is found to the problem (and assuming you like mozilla
browsers) you could always try seamonkey which basically has thunderbird
built into it ,and see if that works. You can install seamonkey as well as
firefox and thunderbird.I switched from firefox/thunderbird to seamonkey
as it uses less resources but is very similar.I now prefer having my mail
from one application i.e seamonkey than having a seperate email
programe.Seamonkey does require a small amount of work to give it that
firefox feeling such as adding extension manager and clear private data
plugin ,and the icandy junior theme really sets it off.It may not be the
route you want to go ,but maybe food for thought anyway.Im not sure if
you are aware (i wasnt ) but there seems to be different server settings
you can use to get your yahoo mail.Ive always used
Incoming Mail Server (POP3): pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk
use secure connection=never, port: 110
I dont use yahoo for smtp.
However you can also try the settings given at yahoo pop config url...
Server Settings...
Incoming Mail Server (POP3): pop.mail.yahoo.co.uk
Use SSL, port: 995
Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): smtp.mail.yahoo.co.uk
Use SSL, port: 465, use authentication
These settings also work for me.I dont know whther you have already tried
them?Perhaps it may make a difference?

Many thanks for the advice and information. I shall probably try
Seamonkey, which is completely new to me. Makes me wonder why Mozilla
still put out TB and Firefox as this package sounds an improvement. I do
want to get away from TP and loathe Outlook.
In the meantime I shall try the settings you list for Incoming and
outgoing mail.
I feel sure that there must be a simple explanation for my problem, it's
just a question of finding it.

Tried all these settings although I no longer get the 'timed out'
message I cannot send or receive mail.
I'm trying this message using TB to see if my ng configuration is working.

Actually, I've changed the setting in incoming/outgoing mail so many
times I really cannot remember what I had in the first place.
I last arrived at a combination of different mail and server names, with
and without the POP and the SMTP in the actual address box, and changing
the ports to995 incoming and 465 outgoing.
This certainly eliminates the timed out window, but it's replaced with a
window telling me that the SMTP server connection failed. Furthermore, I
am then asked for my password, which is rejected.
You have already been extremely helpful and patient but, if you could
bear with me a little longer, I would like to as, you if it would be
possible for you to send me a snapshot of your settings, both for the
incoming server and outgoing server. But, please do not bother if you
cannot do it, for whatever reason.Obviously me legit email address is
without the 'invalid' bit.
By the way, I did delete the whole thing, in the hope that I could start
afresh, but when I downloaded and installed the programme, blow me down,
if it didn't import my last settings!
Anyway, once again thanks for your consideration.

accounts. You need to use these settings.

Fingers crossed, but I think I may have solved the problem/s!.
By a process of trial and error I have, this morning, run the programme
without getting the 'timed out' window. I also was received my emails
and, after tweaking the outgoing server options, hopefully, sent emails
although I am still waiting to hear from my test recipients. Anyway, I
didn't get any 'cannot connect to smtp server' etc, or timed out.
I am with BT Internet, and receive and send my mail through
mail.btinternet.com. I think it was the POP Yahoo settings which caused
me all the trouble.

I have heard (though cant confirm because im not with bt internet) that
thier smtp server frequently has problems. It may be worth you signing for
a gmail account ,as this will allow you to use thier smtp server (you can
use this no matter what ISP your with)and can be used as a primary or
backup smtp server..Theres some info on how to configure here...

Thanks for this. The first two URL's don't work by the way, which is a
pity as I would like to have read them
At the moment I can 1. send messages to the ng, evidence this. 2.
receive emails. But, I cannot send any emails. It appears to go through
the motions of sending and confirms that the message is being delivered,
but I just get the message in the 'sent' folder.
Never mind I'll keep on trying as I like a challenge and it's obviously
me that's doing something wrong.
Incidentally, I shall be away from now until Sunday as we are taking a
short break in Madrid.
Meanwhile, thanks for your continued interest and I look forward to
being back on line next Monday.

This link should work..just look in "email" under "general help" on
settings etc...
http://help.btinternet.com/yahoo/help/servicestatus/
Newsgroups use port 119 rather than 25 and usually have a seperate
server.Check your settings from the help file and if that stil doesnt
work i suggest getting gmail and using thier smtp server instead.
Have a good holiday
