the awful truth about vp6 live encoding

| In and old interview i've read that on2 "retained" the rights for live
encoding with the vp6 codec.
Somebody wrotes that the FMS2 will have the capability of encoding in
vp6... I don't know the way because all the encoding is done on the
client... and on the manuals of the beta server isn't mentioned a way to
encode in VP6
Somebody wrote about the fact that encoding "live" in vp6 is impossible,
this is the true reason for this lack!
Now here's the VP6 COMMUNICATOR
http://www.on2.com/enterprise/vp6-communicator/
I'ts a real time a/v messenger that uses the vp6 codec for encoding video...
I've tested it, incredibly smooth motion and crisp image... in real time!!!
I cannot also notice any delay into the communication (with fcs i never had
a delay less than 0.3)
To work it takes about 20% if my cpu idle time - i have an athlon 2ghz.
Maybe this is the awful truth about the vp6. On2 retained rights to sell
his communicator and to have and advantage on Macromedia.
I've also read the manuals of the flash player 8.5, and vp6 encoding is not
mentioned.
Maybe we will have to wait one or two years before fcs will have this
useful feature!!!
And maybe in next two yers the spark will be a little obsolete.

| Just for the record, Macromedia has never (to my knowledge) advertised
that we do VP6 encoding, either client-side or server-side. And while
live VP6 encoded video may be much nicer than sorenson (I say "may be"
because I haven't actually compared myself), I think you'll have to
admit that apart from this, Flash/FMS2 has many more advantages than the
On2 product. But if the live On2 video is anything like the recorded,
I'll agree with you 100% that it is pretty sweet.

| Hi Ed,
I don't know if MM advertised doing On2 VP6 Encoding, but Flash 8 =20
sure does. (See attached GIF). Of course it does it on an existing =20
file--the attached one was from a MOV file imported into Flash.
Thanks,
Bill
