Check user activity & set status
|

| Hi
I have a video chat application in which there is a "Set Status" function,
which shows whether a user is Online, Away, Busy etc. (similar to that used
in MSN Messenger). At the moment, the user has to select their status, which
is fine if they remember to do it, but I'd like to find a way to
automatically set status to Away if the user's computer isn't being actively
used (e.g. after 5 minutes). It's no good if just the chat app isn't used
for 5 minutes, as it runs in the background it needs to show user as
available unless the actual computer is not being used (again, like MSN
Messenger).
Any ideas?
Andy

| I think the level of OS integration needed for this is beyond the reach of a
browser based application.

| Can you wrap your application with something like Screenweaver or zinc? or
does it have to live in the browser?

| i did this with setting and interval to a timeout.. ... if the user
doesn't submit any message for a definite period of time, it sets
itself as idle... [away, in your case].... that's all... if i
understood the question right.

| At the moment it is running in a projector file, not in a browser. I have
tried wrapping it in FlashJester and mProjector, but they won't run it.

| But even these tools cannot monitor *all* OS activity or can they?

| Have you tried the Open Source version of Screenweaver?

| I'm really not sure, but there are quite a few system hooks available. ther=
e
might be something in there you can key in on that takes care of what's
needed. I've used both zinc and screenweaver, but I've only glossed over th=
e
OS level stuff - but there is quite a bit in there from what I recall. Wort=
h
a look anyway ;)
