smiley, emoticons chat

| Hi,
I know this topic is already viewed here. But there are some recent changes.
And the last post here was in 2004.
Does anyone have already a nice solution for a text chat with smileys?
I used to use Jolan's components, but it seems that his component isn't
compatible with flash7 because there are conflicts with a few components
like peoplelist and listbox.
I read in a forum that there is a second version of his component but I was
not able to find them (www.jolan.org <http://www.jolan.org/> is out of
order)
Those smiley's are very in so there must be at least one person who has a
solution for this.
Regards,
Bart

| I've also been trying to add smileys into my chat.
I've tried to convert v1.3 of jolans component to work with Flash Player
7/Actionscript 2 and have also tried creating my own but it seems to be
a very long process.
If anyone has managed to convert it or created their own solution it
would be great to hear of it.
Thanks, Craig

| Youa re in luck! I've managed recently to make a
FP&/AS 2.0 text field with emote icons. Here it is in
a demo:
http://www.naicuandnaicu.com/flash_smilies/
The above one ddoes not support html. And the
principle is this one: The emote icons are in a movie
above the text. The exact position is found by
measuring lineas and word lenghts (char by char). Word
wrapping is done manually with AS.
I'll post up the code when I get back home right now I
am in a small trip.:p
And here it is in action:
http://www.naicuandnaicu.com/avchat/demo/
This version supports <b> and <i> tags ( bolder font
is wider ) . To note is the fact that i had some
isses with the text size formatted using html. <font
size=3D"11"> rendered as if it were 10px.?!!?
It is not a component yet but it can be easily turned
into one.;)

| No, the search keys used are up to you... for the demo, im not using
shorthand, but you can associate any loadable flash symbol to any keyword,
like the smile emote may be tagged to and :-) and smile and have a
nice day or what ever... I just feel the people with noses are too often
discriminated against, so I force you to type :-) to show solidarity towards
their plight, viva la nose!

I have decided to add no nose support to the key words for the demo, how
ever we will still not support people with chins!

| I hope to be finished with a release version by Monday, also I have been
asked how this is done, so ive added some test word like , test, demo, Demo
, wordaftertrimmingto4 .
Type in wordaftertrimmingto4 and notice the results, then click on the
symbol, this will copy the key back into the message line and change the
fontSize to 32 and hit enter again.
Trimming does not remove any text, it only makes it 0 point, the trimmed
text will take up the same amount of room at any size.
If you have any questions ill be in the room all night.. thanks

Btw,
That trimming method is by design so cut and paste will work

| p.s.
notice that the emotes for and :-) are different sizes, that is because
there is 1 extra char in :-) which makes its text width wider... however if
you don't want that effect simply set the scaleOn parm to height and it will
scale the emote based on wordHeight.

| There is apparently a 5 pixel soft spot where wordwrap flips a coin, and
will produce different results in 2 identical text fields. To only real
solution to this is to do a character delete analysis 2 or 3 times and then
flip another coin... on cloudy days when the temperature is over 65 degrees
and the wind blowing from the west, this method is accurate about 50% of
the time when using a 2 sided coin.

If you have any questions ill be in the room all night.. thanks
p.s.
notice that the emotes for and :-) are different sizes, that is because
there is 1 extra char in :-) which makes its text width wider... however if
you don't want that effect simply set the scaleOn parm to height and it will
scale the emote based on wordHeight.

No, the search keys used are up to you... for the demo, I'm not using
shorthand, but you can associate any loadable flash symbol to any keyword,
like the smile emote may be tagged to and :-) and smile and have a
nice day or what ever... I just feel the people with noses are too often
discriminated against, so I force you to type :-) to show solidarity towards
their plight, viva la nose!

I have just run the same tests using flash 8 and believe it or not, it was 5
times faster.. 9.22 messages per second, how ever it seems there may be a
small second line _x alignment problem, and that IS PROBOBLY DUE to some
change in accuracy in fp8.. I may need to rework some fudge factors from 7
for 100% accuracy under fp8, but for the most part, and unless u are
nitpicking over pixel alignment like I ma.. it works great.. I t is so fast
I had to change to input text to single line to prevent fp8 from sending
multiple messages at once... take a look 8
http://bantv.com/emoteChatDemo.html
Once again.. this app demo is only focused on the text history field, not
the chat app or the editing buttons or the colors of the screen... it is an
example of how to or maybe how not to create emoticons with font formatting
in flash.
Thanks
I will be releasing the source as soon as I am confident it is correct, and
I don't look too amature.. how ever I may release the source sooner if I
copyright it to peldi or bill as there name can make anything look good!

In one of my earlier emails I mentioned that there is no length limit to the
field .. and to illustrate this, beyond my better judgment.. i turned off
the message length limit of the chat app... Bad Scott... the max message
length of the chat app is now 1500.. that will prevent any further crashes.
Also.. I will have a good working version for fp* in a day or 2 I think...

Ok.. it ready... anyone who downloaded that garbage from yesterday, please
replace it with the version that works... it can be found at
http://bantv.com/emoteChatDemo.html.. Yesterday's version was released by
my evil twin brother that I keep locked under the stairs. This release has
no alignment errors and does not swear in Spanish in lue of error messages..
This release was tested for 100,000 30 to 60 char messages with an avg of 3
emotes per message having a response time of 2.5 messages per second. With
1 error.. it lost the scroll bar...
The component is a direct replacement for the UI Text Area component with
all the same properties..
There are 2 input methods, htmlText+=String and message=string.
message=String will prove a little faster as it assumes an additive thus
does not do a compare of the original lable to find the new source.
The major Events are change and emoteClick. If the emots are being used a
text buttons a click event is generated from the text field with the emote
as the target for direct access to the child. The event is customizable per
keyword via the keywords Registration.
on(emoteClick) can be attached to the text field and event data is retrieved
via emoteClick ie..
on(emoteClick){
var o:Object=emoteClick
var m:MovieClip = o.target
m.anamate(true)
}
Or what ever...
The emotes are Ordered View UIObject Children. Anything you can load in a
view will run as a emote / text Object.
Emotes can also be used to fire off events such as FCS broadcasts and such..
Scaling and sizing is completely up to the developer, on a per object
basis..
Let me know if you like it as I am famous for dragging dead horses..
Thanks
Scott Richter

Btw,
That trimming method is by design so cut and paste will work
..

If you have any questions ill be in the room all night.. thanks
p.s.
notice that the emotes for and :-) are different sizes, that is because
there is 1 extra char in :-) which makes its text width wider... however if
you don't want that effect simply set the scaleOn parm to height and it will
scale the emote based on wordHeight.
