I have found that the audio (in) on my Mac turns into a growl if the
mic rate from incoming streams is set to 8kHz. As erroneously
believed, I thought it was a microphone problem, but it's not. It's
something wrong with the Mac built-in audio system--at least on my
iMac. If in-coming settings are 5, 11, 22 or 44 to the Mac, the sound
is fine. The out-going sound is from a Mac's mic is not a problem
either. Only the in-coming sound at 8kHz turns a voice into a troll-
like growl.

If you have a Mac, could you check this out? You can use the app at:

http://nemo.hartford.edu/~wsanders/...CamUtility.html

Just set the Microphone rate to 8 in the ListBox on the right. It
streams the video on the left to the output on the right.

This is not a problem with any PCs I've seen. So please, if you have
a Mac, give it a try. See if you can make a sound that scares small
children.

Thanks,
Bill

Jake,

I apologize. It's driving me nuts. All I need is for a couple of
people with Macs to let me know, and then I can plan for some kind of
tweak to accommodate Macs. So I keep changing the question with the
hope that I'll get some kind of response from Mac users. I guess
there's always the Apple computer store....but I've been banned from
there already.

8khz is very, very low. I'm not surprised that macs dont like it.

Sean,

Thanks. Now, I wonder what causes that and if there's a fix other
than changing all the mic rates from 8kHz to something else. I've
tried adding an external mic to my Mac, but it doesn't pick it up.
Any audio-smarties on this list that would know why the output from
8kHz input would do that?

Thanks,
Bill

Bill,

Can you tell me what player version, and build you're using?

This appears to be a Flash 8 bug. It worked OK for me in player 7 on
two machines (both G4s, one a laptop and the other a box), but not in 8.

I do know there was a report of a similar problem in 8.5, but I'll make
sure the player team knows about it.

Feel free to file a bug yourself if you want to earn the beta bug beer
points.

In the meantime, I would suggest avoiding 8khz mic settings.

Hi Dave,

I filed an Edison bug, but I'll file an F8 one as well -- double beer points?
