Planned FMS 2 Licensing Changes
|
|
| Steven Wolkoff 2005-11-17, 5:46 pm |
| All -
Here are our planned changes to the FMS 2 Licensing scheme:
1. We are going to issue an "Interim" FMS 2 License. This will be a
FREE license file that you can install on your FMS 2 Professional
Edition. This license will allow for: 2500 concurrent connections,
25Mbps max bandwidth, and unlimited Vhosts.
2. This license will expire after a short term - likely 90 days.
After this license expires you, will have at least two choices:
a. You can get a FREE, Perpetual License with the same terms: 2500
CC/ 25Mpbs / Unlimited Vhosts. You will only have to provide your valid
FMS 2 Professional serial key to get this free license.=20
- OR -
b. You can get a FREE, Perpetual License that allows you to have 50
extra CC's on top the base FMS 2 Professional Edition (for a total of
150 CC's), and unlimited bandwidth. This license will be restricted on
Vhosts - likely to remain at the current 3 per license. Again, you will
just have to provide a valid FMS 2 Pro serial key to get this license.
c. Note: there may be more choices at this time - I can only
confirm the above.
3. This will most likely be done through a web based application.
4. The plan is to allow you to choose EITHER type of license at any
given time - however, you can't use more than one type of license per
serial key.=20
5. For example, you could run your server using 2500
CC/25Mbps/Unlimited Vhosts for 6 months, switch over to the
150/Unlimited/3 Vhosts for a year, and then back to the 2500CC/25
Mbps/Unlimited Vhosts.
6. You just could not run BOTH licenses at the same time.
7. You could stack licenses within the same type ("vertical
stacking"). I.e. you could stack two "connection-heavy" licenses to get
5000CC/50Mbps/Unlimited, or two "bandwidth-heavy" licenses to get 300
CC/Unllimited/6Vhosts
8. However, you could not "cross-stack" licenses.=20
9. I know the Interim license is an inconvenience. We need to do
this because the FMS licensing system is not built to handle the
flexibility that you need. We need time to do development work on the
core product, and the 90 window gives us time to do that. Please note
that at the bare minimum, you will be able to swap that interim license
for a perpetual license that is exactly identical.
We hope to have the Interim license available for distribution in the
next few days. I will provide an update as soon as I know when they will
be available. Please note that this is not all we are doing - however,
this is all I can confirm right now. There were a number of very good
suggestions presented on and off list, and we will do our best to
satisfy everyone.
If you have questions or concerns, feel free to contact me via email for
phone (info below).
Thank you all for you feedback, patience, and understanding.
-steve.
P.S. For those wondering on-list earlier - Chris Hock is now Director of
Product Management. I work for him as Product Manager for FMS. We are
both involved in the FMS product and business. Org charts to follow - I
hope you all like 5MB PPT attachments.

One small step for media applications

One giant (okay, not so giant but more satisfying) step for text/data
intesive (gaming) applications.
Steven, did you notice that I made some calculations and reduced my
proposal for 500 cc's (and no bw cap) down to 250 cc's (and no bw cap) to b=
e
even more reasonable? I think this is only necessary.
-Aaron
P.S. Should the following have been fine print at the bottom to inform us
that we may not actually get at least 150 cc's with no bandwidth?
Please note that at the bare minimum, you will be able to swap that interi=
m
license
for a perpetual license that is exactly identical.

| I think we can do with this licensing. Wish "cross stacking" was possible
. It would have saved us an effort to create a server structure to host
audio-only and video users together.

| So this Interim license is a temporary solution until more changes can be=
made (and the marketing team redoes those studies).
=20
Once changes are made, the web interface that generates those Interim l=
icenses will most certainly be removed.
=20
I can only say that this is a improovement for all the FCS clients upgr=
ading. They get the FMS features, 2500 cons, and an additional 15 Mb of b=
and.
=20
BUT, hold your horses, once the "Interim" licence is removed we will ha=
ve to use the new licensing model that MM will develop meanwhile.

| Mark and Harman,
The new proposal may work for you but what about those of us who will be
doing more Flash video streaming than anything else... lets look out for
each other.
Overall, MM is listening to us and they are definitely interested in this
community. However, I think that if they really want our loyalty they will
give us (a/v guys) 500 cc's, but if they are "bean counters" they will only
give us 250 cc's, or even worse... 150.

| Wow, that's not at all confusing either.

I would dread trying to explain all this to the powers that be. They
have a hard enough time understanding what a media server IS. I hope
Macromedia comes up with a good way to explain all this to potential
customers. I don't mean that as a personal jab at all, I know you're
just doing the job, I don't mean to shoot the messenger. =20

| Hi Aaron,
Since there are 2 choices after the period:
2500 CC/ 25Mpbs / Unlimited Vhosts
OR
150 CC/ Unlimited Mpbs / 3 Vhosts
This at least gives us flexibility in what we like best. For large amounts
of video or as a hostingcopmany you're probably stuck to Origin/Edge
anyway...
Kind regards,

Mark and Harman,
The new proposal may work for you but what about those of us who will be
doing more Flash video streaming than anything else... lets look out for
each other.
Overall, MM is listening to us and they are definitely interested in this
community. However, I think that if they really want our loyalty they will
give us (a/v guys) 500 cc's, but if they are "bean counters" they will only
give us 250 cc's, or even worse... 150.

Onderwerp: [FlashComm] Planned FMS 2 Licensing Changes
All -
Here are our planned changes to the FMS 2 Licensing scheme:
1. We are going to issue an "Interim" FMS 2 License. This will be a
FREE license file that you can install on your FMS 2 Professional Edition=
..
This license will allow for: 2500 concurrent connections, 25Mbps max
bandwidth, and unlimited Vhosts.
2. This license will expire after a short term - likely 90 days.
After this license expires you, will have at least two choices:
a. You can get a FREE, Perpetual License with the same terms: 2500
CC/ 25Mpbs / Unlimited Vhosts. You will only have to provide your valid F=
MS
2 Professional serial key to get this free license.=20
- OR -
b. You can get a FREE, Perpetual License that allows you to have 50
extra CC's on top the base FMS 2 Professional Edition (for a total of 150
CC's), and unlimited bandwidth. This license will be restricted on Vhosts=
-
likely to remain at the current 3 per license. Again, you will just have =
to
provide a valid FMS 2 Pro serial key to get this license.
c. Note: there may be more choices at this time - I can only
confirm the above.
3. This will most likely be done through a web based application.
4. The plan is to allow you to choose EITHER type of license at any
given time - however, you can't use more than one type of license per ser=
ial
key.=20
We need to do
this because the FMS licensing system is not built to handle the flexibil=
ity
that you need. We need time to do development work on the core product, a=
nd
the 90 window gives us time to do that. Please note that at the bare
minimum, you will be able to swap that interim license for a perpetual
license that is exactly identical.
We hope to have the Interim license available for distribution in the nex=
t
few days. I will provide an update as soon as I know when they will be
available. Please note that this is not all we are doing - however, this =

all I can confirm right now. There were a number of very good suggestions

| Aaron,
I hope mine and other's e-mails don't soften the stance. BTW, in the longer
run for us (may be not so long), your proposal is much better (and not to
say simpler). I just wanted to encourage Steve a bit since he's been taking
a lot of heat from us.
I am sure he loves us and is going to make the 250 CC's possible as you
suggested. Right, Steve?
I am not upgrading to FMS yet, not until he comes up with the final
licensing.

| Mark,
I am advocating at least 250 cc's and unlimited bw for bandwidth intensive
apps. Did anyone notice that everything after "OR" is still speculative
while 2,500 cc users and 25 Mbps is more of a promise?
I don't know how long to wait before all this is finalized and we can know
for certain that *if* we buy FMS 2 and download the interim license we will
have both options (to make the interim perpetual or switch to a more
bandwidth/media centric license).

No mention of Origin/Edge pricing, what about those? $45k/$15k is too
steep unless we're looking at unlimited connections *and* bandwidth, and
even then it's still steep compared to competing products. Remember, in
enterprise dev teams, there will need to be at least one dev origin/edge
setup, at least one QA origin/edge setup, and then your prod origin with as
many edge servers as needed. So right away I'm looking at $150k in origin
servers, and $45k-$75k in edge servers. That's $200k-$250k to do the same
thing I could do for $36k (our current 8 licenses) with FCS1.5 if proxied
objects actually worked. But due to a bug in your software, I can't do it
with our existing servers, so I have to upgrade at 5-6 times the cost just
to be able to do what I *should've* been able to do with what I already
bought.
> 2. This license will expire after a short term - likely 90 days.

Unfortunately, I see through this. What this looks like to me is a way
to say "Go ahead and buy the server, start building your app, and then we
can drop the caps on you after you've already paid and you don't have any
choice but to accept them". Personally, I wouldn't buy, nor would I
recommend anyone buy, FMS until the licensing is worked out and finalized.
Interim licenses aren't a problem for me, because I would never buy into an
unknown like that.

I don't get it... ? If you could do it with 8 FCS licenses utilizing 2,500

FMS licenses utilizing 2,500 cc's and 25 Mbps?
Are you just blowing hot air?

If I might throw one more idea into the ring...
Maybe a 500 cc with 100 meg license?
That would cover user heavy apps (2500 cc), streaming heavy apps
(unlimited bw), and then those somewhere in the middle.
Thoughts?

| Big thanks to Macromedia for being flexible and making these changes based
on everyone's feedback. I think we should all be happy that we now have
options that are less restrictive than the 1.5 licensing model was.

Subject: [FlashComm] Planned FMS 2 Licensing Changes
All -
Here are our planned changes to the FMS 2 Licensing scheme:
FMS 2 Professional serial key to get this free license.
- OR -
4. The plan is to allow you to choose EITHER type of license at any
given time - however, you can't use more than one type of license per
serial key.
8. However, you could not "cross-stack" licenses.

Because I need load balancing, and since they apparently still don't
have proxied SOs working properly, the only way to do it is with the
Origin/Edge setup. But with their current pricing, switching to their
Origin/Edge setup would cost close to a quarter of a million bucks! If I can
build a load balancing system without their origin/edge servers I might be
able to get away cheaper, but it seems to me they don't want you to do that,
they want you to buy their Origin/Edge servers for load balancing. Which I'm
fine with, if they work and aren't ridiculously expensive. Like I said, I
could probably sell them at their current price if they were unlimited BW
*and* connections, but no mention has been made of the licensing for those
editions.

| Steven, first, thanks for you dedication,
All of this is quite good news ... for people already having a strong
business built on flashcom and willing to move on and keep their customers.
What about the others ?
All these discussions on the needs of each other might have eluded
another problem : *the personal edition is simply gone.*
It's "free or $4500". Come on. Preserving a business is something.
Building one is another.
From 2002 to the end of 2004, there are been many people that have been
completely and utterly *not* willing to hear anything about web
technologies, let it be video streaming. "Suit-wearers" that (I quote)
'didn't understand the need for new ways of marketing and advertising'
(believe it or not).
Fear of a return of the dotcom collapse nightmare ? For sure.
The point is that, well at least in my area, potential customers
contacted 2 or 3 years ago by my company seem to have woken up from that
nightmare.
And they just contacting us back on their own !
Among those customers, there were possibilities for deployment of
"lightweight" flashcom solutions, be it on an intranet or a dedicated
server. In those cases, we were basically aiming towards Personal
licence : the dual limit of both bandwith was irritating for sure, but
the price affordable for those customers.
The gain obtained with a Pro licence was not just closing the case :
they are customers not willing to pay that much, period.
Until CDNs (like vitalstream, speedera) appeared, it would have been
impossible to content those customers for a fair price without the
Personal licence. (And the major CDNs only can help you in the a/v
streaming departement. And for internet solutions.)
I'd like also to point something else about the way the Personal licence
was used :
Fact 1: I'm sure none of us has started developing prototypes on the
developer licence. What could you do or evaluated with 250kbps/2cc ?
Nothing. We all used at least the Personal licence (and whining about
the bw limitation). The pricing alone was somehow not too different from
a fresh version of dreamweaver or flash ...
Fact 2: Many of us used at the beginning Personal licences to build
businesses around FlashCom. This was not forbidden by the licence and
you could get a ROI.
Fact 3: With the new licensing scheme, either you're toying with the
technology OR you're already have a strong business with it. Where has
the intermediate step gone ?
Of course, considering the initial licensing scheme for FMS2, it would
be weird to reinstate the Personal licence :
Developer Edition : unlimited bw/10 cc : Free
Personal Edition : unlimited bw/50 cc : $500
Pro Edition : unlimited bw/100 cc : $4500 (9 time the price, twice the
number of cc, ah ah !).
To sum up : yes, there are small and medium sized companies that do work
with FlashCom. ("small" is the keyword here).

| I second this motion. After all the egg that was thrown around I
think we should be very thankful at how fast MM moved on adjusting
the license to address our concerns. For the record, the original
license was exactly what I needed, but the new scheme is just total
icing on the cake for our project.
As for the temporary nature of the license, my guess is that rather
than release a new build they are going to give us 90 day temps until
the next scheduled maintenance release at which time it'd be nice if
the new options were settings we had control over (toggled states in
admin panel? I've been a fan of the slider metaphor for over a year
now).
Big thanks to Steve, Chris, and anyone lurking in the background at
MM for making this adjustment possible and for their professional
communication through all the white noise.
BTW, I think the Developer version with 10 users and unlimited BW is
an insane offer. A very welcome improvement which is allowing us to
do *real* development. In my mind it replaces the need for the
Personal Edition (you know, to let your mom see your face etc).
Thank you.

Just a quick note - this is my last day at the Streaming Media West
conference, so I'll be more accessible starting tomorrow.
I wrote my earlier email fairly quickly, so it might not have been as
clear as it could have. To address some questions:
- The Interim license is needed because the current FMS product can't
really handle the flexible licensing you need. The 90 day term buys us
time to update the bits and deliver a new build.
=20
- At the end of the interim, you will have a choice of essentially
continuing that interim license for perpetuity (though it would require
downloading a new license), or downloading a new licen | | |
