Flash 8 installation base
|
|
| Harman Singh 2005-11-19, 5:45 pm |
| Guys,
Does anyone know what percentage of web users (or browsers) in the world
have Flash 8 installed now? MM website on statistics doesn't have that
number. Also, if someone can estimate what would be the installation base in
3-4 months from now. Some intelligent guesses/ guess-timates will work too.
We are developing an application for Flash and need to decide if Flash 8 (or
7) is the way to go.
Thanks,
Harman

| So far there have been over 250 million downloads and installs.
So, that's pretty good I think although not perfect if you want to make sure
you get over 50% of your target (depends on your target too, you didn't
mention that)
I personally would push for player 8 because it's being installed in
computers at an amazingly high rate, and that seems to be the pattern for
the first little while.
There should be info on this on the MM site because they were flaunting it
all across the world at the MAX conferences.

| Thanks for the input, Graeme.
Ours is more of home users market, teenagers. So don't know what percentage
we should target.

| Macromedia will soon release some figures on this. Player 8 install rates
have been phenomenal and better than predicted, even by Macromedia.
The magic number of 80% penetration should be hit within the next 6 months.

| I wonder how accurate those rates are given that everytime I was prompted t=
o
download the update the installation never worked and I received an annoyin=
g
little message box asking me if I want to retry. I must of downloaded the
update several dozen times and I am still not sure if I actually got it to
install properly.
It has been a week or so since I visited a site that uses Flash and I got =
a
update dialog box crowding my window. I was also trying to download it
directly from the MM website so that I wouldn't continue being annoyed by
the update window everytime I visited a site with Flash. This didn't yeild
better result eighter.
My two Cents.
