I am currently working on a project where I'm faced with a huge
technical challenge. Over the holiday I've dug into FMS to try to
figure out a solution, but I haven't made any progress.

To sum up the challenge we are looking to record or capture the
movements and interactions of a MovieClip as a FLV using the Flash Media
Server. The obvious solution of simply recording the interaction's as a
data feed will not work as the final outcome will need to be a physical
FLV (which will be converted to MPEG4). The initial approach has been
to see if I could use the Video.attachVideo() method to define a
MovieClip as a source.

I'm almost to the point where I believe FMS is not capable of what we
need to accomplish, but I just wanted to check with this mailing list to
make sure. Next step will be exploring other options.

Jonathan,
The only way I can see this working is by using screenrecording software to
capture the exact view that the user has over the application.
Camtasia or VHScrCap could probably achieve this.

As you rightly pointed out you could embed movement information into the flv
via ns.send but that will not allow for conversion into MPEG4.

A Flash/FMS2 only solution seems unlikely but I'd love to be proven wrong.

Regards

Stefan

A tool like Camtasia just will not work for this project. The goal
would be to record only a specific MovieClip on the stage rather than
any elements on the desktop. This project will also be a video creation
tool that the mass public will be using.

The next route I'm exploring is to scale down the 'visualization' to
just allowing the user to overlay different FLVs to create a unique
effect. We could then record the interaction's data as a FMS data feed,
store it in a database, then explore the options of creating a
server-side tool to handle the actual 'compositing' of the FLVs to
create the final MPEG4 file.

Also, if anyone would be interested in working on this project as a
freelance Flash/FMS developer please feel free to shoot me an email.
