FlashCom being blocked by Schools

| I teach high school physics out here in the virtual world also known as
distance education.
I've created a FlashCom tool that allows my students to get homework
help from me. They can either talk to me live or leave a recorded
message for me to reply to later. They can use text and audio and I
respond with text, audio, and a whiteboard. Rather than a Shared Object
system, my whiteboard is a screen capture using Camtasia's Live Output tool.
The whole thing works great when:
1) Students use it from home.
2) Teachers use it at school with their faculty passwords.
But at nearly all schools, when students try to use it with their
student passwords, their browser just times out somehow and never lets
them participate. Since my whole course is Flash and Quicktime-based (on
DVDs and CD-ROMS), they routinely use Flash on these same computers when
working with local files. And they've been doing that for years (since
Future Splash!) with no problem.
I've had three server administrators look into it with no success. But
these people are usually given a huge number of schools to keep up and
running so they've not really put in a lot of effort I'm afraid.
Any ideas about where to start here?
Any help would be appreciated,

Thanks for the pointers. I'll check out both those docs.
When I was considering ports and all that I thought that it might not be
an issue since teachers had no problem. I don't know much about the
server systems that schools use, but I'd guessed that the ports would
not play a part in the system, only some sort of policies.

in the FCS. Also if you want to uneable it you will have to move the FCS=
on it's own box.

But I was not aware that HTTP tunneling over port 80 was not enabled by
default.

later) will automatically attempt to connect over several different
ports and then attempt to channel communication over HTTP whenever
there's a problem connecting. Think of HTTP tunneling as "RTMP traveling
over HTTP". The bottom line is even the pickiest firewall won't pose a
problem because you can connect through port 80 over HTTP (a port and
protocol that is surely open to anyone browsing the web)."
All my schools have at least 6,0,65 installed so I'd assumed that I was
good to go on that point.
Is there something I'm missing here?

| If you haven't changed the config files at all, you need to make sure FCS is
listening on port 80
In \Flash Communication Server MX\conf\_defaultRoot_\Adaptor.xml
Modify <HostPort> tag to read: <HostPort>:1935,443,80</HostPort>

Not quite correct, you can run FCS in parallel with a webserver on the same
box, both on port 80 but both must have their own IP.

Also Chuck, after you make the modifications to the XML file, make shur=
e you reset the FCS server.

| Wow, I am so proud to be a part of this chattyfig list! I love the way you
guys were able to narrow down on Chuck's problem and help him get to the
root of the issue.
Stefan, did you create that app just for Chuck or did you have that up on
your site already?
You guys make me feel like such a newbie... well, maybe that's because I
still am. A very inspired newbie with great community support! Now if only
MM would support the community... we would have quite a... I don't know but
it would be swwweeeeeeeett!!!

| That's what we're here for, to be kicked in the teeth LOL
That port tester has been up on my site for a long time. I used to have
another nice one which someone had created, it included a timer which was
neat for determining which connections are fastest. I emailed the original
creator because I lost the source file but I think he has moved on from FCS
as I never got a reply...
