One of our guys read that MM has licensed ON2's codec. That's a good
thing if true. I've been playing with it today. It is far more
efficient than Spark.

Anyone have confirmation of this?

I've heard that rumor too. And I hope its true. Because it is the best
codec out there. It has microsoft and real beat by a country mile. I
just wonder whether it can encode fast enough to do webcam stuff or if
we will still be stuck with h.263 (i.e. flv) for that.

Why bother with HD-DVD when you've got this? At 700kb/second it looks
better than 3.5mpbs MPEG2. It was tying up 50-70 percent of my 3.2ghz
single proc when scaled to fullscreen.

Wrap live encoding and Flash interactivity around this and we'll change
the world.

You may be right

Search for 'Macromedia' on that page.

Ok, so there's the license....

- The license of On2 software to Macromedia, for which approximately
$1.5 million in revenue was recognized during the year.

When, where and how will this technology be seen in MM products? Will
it go to Breeze? FCS? Both? Something new?

Who knows, would make sense though wouldn't it?
Let's just hope it's not another Breeze only feature - but I doubt that very
much.

Word is that it will be integrated into FP8. The word is that Flash MX2005 will be out in May. FP8 may preceed that. FCS will arrive much later.

I agree with Hank's best-to-worst comment. The interactive capabilities of Flash with the best video codec makes for paradigm shifting. Static streaming media will soon be a thing of the past.

I dont know about third party, but here is a link to a bunch or their
analysis and comparison
http://www.on2.com/vp7_samples.php

There used to be (last year) a side by side comparison where they
compressed their stuff and windows media and real so you could see
what the same video looked like compressed with the different codecs.
But I was not able to find it just now.

But in any case, the samples and technical discussion is very
impressive. These guys seem to be much better engineers than they are
marketers.

The bottom line is that, even regardless of comparisons, the videos
just look great, which is something that flash just cant say right
now.

The other piece of good news is it appears that you can do real time
encoding, which means that at some point, it should be possible to
record video and to do video conferencing with this much better codec.
Of course the problem is that we know FCS is not timed with the new
release of the player. Which means video conferencing will not look
anything like pre-recorded video until the new FCS becomes available.

Hank
