haha
I generally warn my clients on how to reduce echo when headphones are not an
option.
Reduce volume of speakers
Back away from the speakers if you can
On a dev point of view, I make sure to have the reduce echo thingy on
(that's programmer talk)
Other than that, I'm not sure there is much else you can do.

| DAMMIT! ...well, my fault, I left that open.
Geez, that's it!? I'm getting like my echo on another's NetStream, as well
as other users on a modified AS2, flex-i-fied Flex version. It's pretty bad
when even just 2 people talk at the same time because the echo happens
pretty harshly.
A lot of coding of volume controls and mute buttons just to avoid this, but
then, it still gives the user control, so I guess it's alright.
I vote for an echoSuppression2 for Flashcom 2.0.

| Hello,
I am new to FlashCom and this list, however, can the existing calls be used
to create a reliable gate?
Microphone.activityLevel
Microphone.onActivity
Microphone.setSilenceLevel()
Noise gates can be used to eliminate noise from an amplified sound such as a
guitar when it is not being played. The gate threshold must be high enough
so that all ambient noise falls below it and low enough so that the guitar
sound is cut off too soon. Think of it as an automatic MUTE during silence.
Is this what you have already done JesterXL?
Has anyone tried and or had any success doing this?

| SR,
If you mean what I think you do, I believe that you will need some way
to first determine what the background level you want to mute below.
You're dealing with ambient noise and not echo. However, for either, a
headset with boom or lavalier mic will solve most of your problems. For
example, if the background guitar tops out at 25 you can set your
setSilenceLevel() to something like,
setSilenceLevel(30,ms);
which means that the Mic won't start streaming audio until the audio is
greater than 30. (The ms is simply the milliseconds that you wait
before the stream stops if the activityLevel is below the first
parameter.) So your setSilencelevel() method actually takes care of
both the onActivity event and activityLevel property in that the first
argument is the property and when it is exceeded, it kicks in the
activity.
Also see pp 214-216 of Brian's book as well.
One final tip. Labtec used to make a very good (and inexpensive)
headset/mic combination, the Labtec Axis-302. You can still find them
at bargain basement prices at places like eBay and Overstock.com. I
have one for both my iMac and XP and they're great.

| Yes, you understood perfectly Bill, establishing the ambient noise is the
key. Everyone is correct though solving the issue at its root is done by
using a headset/mic combination. But is sounds like JesterXL does not have
that as an implementation option, "... And NO, headphones doesn't count as a
good answer. - JesterXL"
I going to check out Brian's book, it sounds great! You all have a great
community here.
Thanks Bill

| I always recommend the headset / mic combo as a solution. The only
problem with it is these high power executive types say they feel
embarassed or like idiots when they wear them. :P
