| An interesting article on streaming video appeared by C/NET editor Tom
Merritt.

The jist of the article is that streaming content is hot stuff but the
content and service needs to be addressed. (His example is a
subscription to ML baseball.) Streaming video for things like baseball
doesn't make a lot of sense--especially when people are buying huge
plasma screens that will do that same thing via cable and dish. In
fact, for most things that have been done traditionally on TV in the TV
way of doing things doesn't make a lot of sense on the Internet.
About 50 years ago when TVs really started popping up in peoples homes,
pundits were making all kinds of goofy predictions -- like education
would no longer be in a classroom but would be all done on TV. Of
course most of the predictions never came true, but the ones that did
make major changes were because of unique adaptations to TV and not
because of a direct transfer of programming from radio or theater
occurred.
Herein lies the role of FCS -- what's it going to be as FCS or some
other streaming video? Porno (adult content) and Al Qaeda seem to have
led the way -- taking advantages of streaming video with ancient
content -- neked women and ideology. However, there's been very little
in the way of some really different ideas for streaming video as a live
interactive or recorded media delivery system.
Once that is figured out -- beyond simply taking TV ads and putting
them on the Internet -- someone (maybe one of us) is going to hit the
jackpot.
