powerpoint & flashcom integration

| Shai Topaz 2005-04-26, 5:45 pm |
| Hello forum,
I've been asked to provide a custom web conferencing solution to a
client, and flashcom came out on top. Great, everyone was happy...
until... the dreaded "web based powerpoint content delivery" came on the
scene. Before despair kicks in - does anyone have an idea as to some
kind of an API / or component module that could do this? - Yes i do know
about Breeze - so I'll save you the hassle. The conferencing app has to
be custom made hence Breeze as it stands does not really help.
Kind regards
Shai

| I've succesfully used "Nalanda Quick Flash" to convert manually some=20
Powerpoints in Swf Format and used it within presentationSwf component of=
=20
Flashcom. "Quick Flash" seems very stable and full featured program, it a=
lso=20
comes in API Version: http://www.webspiders.com/en/api_version.asp
If you want a simpler solution (and cheaper one ;-)) try my simple piece =
of=20
software to convert a series of jpgs or pngs into swf for Flashcom. It is=
=20
named "PPTFCS" and you can try it here:=20
http://www.interdevsolutions.it/pptfcs.htm
Hope it helps

Yeah, I've used "Nalanda Quick Flash", which is pretty good because of =
its
small file size output. The API version is a little expensive.
I found these tools to be amazingly useful, and free:
http://www.quiss.org/swftools/
You could output your PPT as PNGs (either by saving them as PNGs, or by=
exporting them from a macro), then convert them to GIFs with any image
conversion tool, then convert a folder full of GIFs into one SWF file, =
one
GIF per frame, with one of tools from the site above. GIFs are much
smaller than PNGs and JPGs. The output SWF can easily be used in the
presentationSWF component within Flash.
Outputting images from PPT works best with PPT 2000 as it renders text
better than newer versions, but any version WILL work.
Thanks,

| Or you could just write a utility to convert the ppt to html and load it
into your app.

| You can also export your PPTs as a sequence of vector-based WMF files which=
=20
can be imported into Flash. I would do that instead of converting to PNG or=
=20
HTML. It has the added benefit of leaving all of the text fields editable.

That's the best, even converting animation perfectly, but they want 25k+ for the server version. We did not have a good experience with the webspiders product...

serverside ppt2swf (command-line) converter, something like the one in
Breeze?

| I know this is not a software review mailinglist, but I have to make a
snarky comment about PowerConverter, Brian.
The people behind it are either terribly disorganized, or terribly rude, =
or
quite possibly both. The company I work for was basically screwed for $50=
0US
by these guys, not to mention the hours of troubleshooting, trying to get
through to them, being given wrong license keys several times, no support=
,
ah - I could write an entire book on this story - and I will, if anyone a=
sks
me to
Things might have shaped up, or we might have been extremely unlucky with
every sequence of event with this company, but we did end up finding a
different product that handled conversion alot better than PowerConverter=
,
called Articulate. Roughly same price as PowerConverter, but alot faster,
neater, friendlier etc. etc. Deals with intra-animated slides very well.
Sincerely,
Simon Skr=F8dal

| I don't know if this is a direction you can go, but I have integrated FLV
video, transcript, and powerpoint presentation using FCS and FlashPaper. If
you don't need the video and transcript, (I think you are describing a
real-time collaboration thing) - just load the FlashPaper file in to your
swf and give the presenter the ability to change the slide number. When
she/he does, update a SO that triggers the slide number change for each
client. That would be the simplest way I could think to do it. You would
sort of be faking a portion of the Breeze platform.

Our relationship with Webspiders ended in October 2004. I'm sure the
product has changed since then. Further discussion of this is in a grey
area where I should not trespass. =20
For any product or api for which you might be interested, I think it is
sober policy to insist on a development or trial version before
investing in the production version. =20

| Thanks,
That's what I wanted to hear. I tried their desktop tool and it worked
ok-ish. We would have probably gone ahead and purchased the API version had
they given us a usable demo.
I'll read between the lines and will make a decision shortly ;-)

| Someone out there correct me if I misspeak. My understanding is that a
version of FlashPaper ships as part of the Mac Contribute platform.
http://www.macromedia.com/software/contribute/. There are a couple of
features that are missing from the Mac version, but according to MM it
functions. I have not tried it myself.
