Author Smilies for the rest of us...

Evening all, I'd like to invite you to test my solution to the chat
smilie problem. I realize there were some options out there but they
didn't fill my needs, nor were they free or easy to setup an modify
(least for me :P...).

My solution was to create a custom font, each smilie is composed of
multiple characters representing shades of colour, eyes, mouths etc.
While my test set only contains about ~50 smilies and graphics, I would
guesstimate that you can create over 500 variations without batting an
eyelash. New smilies can be made simply by typing, or by altering the
colours on the ones I've already made.

The link below has two modes, the first allows you to look at the
smilies and how they breakdown into text and html, the second mode (see
tabs) is a simple chat area you can log into and test for yourself.
Some of the smilies use odd characters (such as :sync and so they
don't render properly and cause smilies typed afterwards to sometimes
appear corrupt (or corrupt previously typed ones). Just type /clear and
continue. I need to remap some shapes onto other keys to fix that
problem.

Please send me feedback on smilies I may have missed or smilies/picons
you think would be cool. I may need to create 3 or more font sets to
get everything we need. It's very time consuming to create the assets,
so if I can do as much as I can in one shot and let the community take
over afterwards that would be ideal.

When I'm done I'll post a more detailed article to Stefan's website
with the font (PC/Mac) in TrueType (with the smilie function). The
faster I get comments the quicker I can create more sets (after fixing
a few smilies in the current set). I think the smilies are on topic
*enough* to stay on the list, that way we can all read each others
suggestions.

The fonts will be free.

http://www.karbonized.com/smilies/index.html

PS: The installation for these smilies is:

1- Install font
2- Add function to split().join() for smilie codes
3- Compile

Done.

PSPS: Use your right mouse key to zoom in on the smilies while in chat.
Right now they are hardcoded to render at 18pt but as you zoom in
you'll see they scale very well (TrueType rules). I left the scale
setting to true so you can also resize your browser to see the smilies
larger.

Sincerely,
Simon

Yeah, because this is a font based solution it would technically work
with Flash 1.0, or whichever version supported htmlText.

Think he means source code. No one says "2004 pro compatible" and means
the player version.. .. (or at least, they shouldn't)

Yes, to both. There's really no AS1/AS2 to be done though, you install
the font, install the smilie function and compile to either AS1 or AS2.
Done.

That said, with regards to some smilies not drawing correctly, I've
been looking at the code and I think the issue may be with the way I'm
putting everything together. The code in my split().join() function is
fine, however, I think I may be screwing things up when I merge the
history and incoming messages and appending those. It almost seems as
if some of the html is being dropped in the chat window.

If anyone wants the Mac/PC font now to test then grab it here and
follow the instructions. I'm curious to see if you guys get better
results, I have long since dropped any illusions of being great in
flash and fully accept the problem is likely in my chap app (not the
font).

http://www.karbonized.com/smilies/Archive.zip

..TTF is the PC truetype font
..suit is the Mac font

The fla is the sample you have been playing with. I stuck the function
I use to swap smile codes for the graphical smilies on the second frame
(it's also in the chat component).

If anyone gets it to work without seeing the corrupted smilie problem
then PLEASE fill me in (code or app sample). I'm almost certain it's
my chump code and not the font.

And please don't use it in a final product, I'll likely make drastic
changes this weekend and increase the set by 3X. You'll just be
creating more work for yourselves by trying to actually use it (it's
gonna be free so don't worry).

Thanks to everyone that joined in tonight, I did see a small pattern
emerge but testing the font directly in your own app will really help
out. Some of the errors I saw tonight made no sense and so I blame my
code, not the font. :P

Let me know (directly).

Install instructions:

1- Install Font
2- open your app
3- create new font resource for Smilies-Normal font
4- insert smilie function CS or SS (you'll need to mod it for SS)

.... that should be it. It's pretty painless, you have my fla to fall
back on.

Simon,

Early in the AM, and it works nicely on my PC and Mac, but I was not
able to get it working on my new Safari on my Mac. This was probably
due to some screwy software plugins on Safari I have. Performed
flawlessly on my Mac using IE.

custom objects/smilies (nothing too specific though, I'd like the free=20=

set of smilies to be generic enough for everyone.)

Immature maybe, but fun and colourful nonetheless (and it's what I'm=20
good at/enjoy). The smilies can also be hyperlinked or trigger an=20
asfunction, so they will be more functional than just being eye candy=20
(IE, you can embed a smilie/picon that looks like a UI button to=20
trigger a download etc, thus hiding long messy link tags from appearing=20=

in chat).

Thanks to everyone that tested BTW. More in a few weeks.

Well done Simon, this has wider implications than just flash.
The font is one thing and the split join stuff is just an
implementation detail for flash implementation. (It would be fairly
easy to write macros for say MS Word to use the font)

In fact I just played with your font in word a bit. Type this in:
test zIR ing
then change " xIR " to your font. Neat.
Something that I would suggest though... Word (and other programs)
often display the name of the font in that font - so your font
"Smileys" or whatever it is turns up as a black blob. Solutions:
call the font a 1 character name and make that char in your font
contain the whole name (or logo or something), like your "karbonized"
character - make sure you set the hinting correctly for that char.
call the font "Smileys" and reserve all of those characters as
really the right characters

Going to play with your fla a bit now...

hi Simon,

you don't need to nest your font tags so much. It looks to me like
sometimes you are missing at least one closing font tag. I would not
nest them more than required, open one font tag with the face and the
size, then open and close nested tags to change the color then close
the main font tag. This should simplify the code to generate the html
and also make it much easier to see that is is correct html.

so (for instance) your whistle smiley:
<FONT FACE=3D'Verdana' SIZE=3D'36' COLOR=3D'#330000'> Z<FONT
COLOR=3D'#DEA701'>A<FONT COLOR=3D'#330001'>z<FONT COLOR=3D'#F2D300'>C<FONT
COLOR=3D'#FEEE00'>D0<FONT COLOR=3D'#000000'>1<FONT COLOR=3D'#FFFFFE'>u<FONT
COLOR=3D'#000001'>v</FONT></FONT>t<FONT COLOR=3D'#FF0000'>2<FONT
COLOR=3D'#339900'>3 </FONT></FONT></FONT></FONT></FONT></FONT></FONT>

becomes:
<FONT FACE=3D'Verdana' SIZE=3D'36'><FONT COLOR=3D'#330000'> Z</FONT><FONT
COLOR=3D'#DEA701'>A</FONT><FONT COLOR=3D'#330001'>z</FONT><FONT
COLOR=3D'#F2D300'>C</FONT><FONT COLOR=3D'#FEEE00'>D0</FONT><FONT
COLOR=3D'#000000'>1</FONT><FONT COLOR=3D'#FFFFFE'>u</FONT><FONT
COLOR=3D'#000001'>v</FONT><FONT COLOR=3D'#000000'>t</FONT><FONT
COLOR=3D'#FF0000'>2</FONT><FONT COLOR=3D'#339900'>3 </FONT></FONT>

which is a little more verbose but less complex - hence easier to
verify as correct.

having not looked too much further I think this could explain the
problems that you are having... maybe.

there also seems to be something screwy with how you have put the font
in your test fla - it totally screws the font up for me if I open your
fla before creating a clean one with the font embedded - I have seen
lots of problems like this before with fonts so I wouldn't worry too
much about it. I have found that the "font symbols in the library"
method that you are using usually works, but I usually export for
actionscript and specify the font in code rather than using the
properties of the text field - seems to do weird things (flash in
general not just your font) - eg (open your fla, drop a text field,
open the font name drop down, check out how many Smiley or
Smiley-Normal fonts you can see - I often notice this sort of oddness
when I get FLAs that graphic designers have made - ie ones that use
different fonts...)

(I will keep playing)

wow. the font does not seem to work at all for me in firefox, but it
is just dandy in ie... oh well.

my test case is this:

<html>
<body>
test a whistler&nbsp;<FONT FACE=3D'smilies' SIZE=3D'6'><FONT
COLOR=3D'330000'> Z</FONT><FONT COLOR=3D'#DEA701'>A</FONT><FONT
COLOR=3D'#330001'>z</FONT><FONT COLOR=3D'#F2D300'>C</FONT><FONT
COLOR=3D'#FEEE00'>D0</FONT><FONT COLOR=3D'#000000'>1</FONT><FONT
COLOR=3D'#FFFFFE'>u</FONT><FONT COLOR=3D'#000001'>v</FONT><FONT
COLOR=3D'#000000'>t</FONT><FONT COLOR=3D'#FF0000'>2</FONT><FONT
COLOR=3D'#339900'>3 </FONT></FONT>&nbsp;&nbsp;this should be default
text
</body>
</html>

also - you may consider using &nbsp; rather and a space char - users
are not expecting their single char to have a space after it by
default so if they put a space after it that will get gobbled up by
the html interpreter (if you get my meaning)

also - some thought on smileys that are larger than 1em - like the
whistler, the trailing smiley-space that you tack on does not push the
next character beyond the smiley because the smiley is bigger (if you
get my meaning...) - could well be "can't fix, won't fix"

wow. I think I drank too much coffeeeee todayyyyyyyyy. *zip* *sproing*

There is almost certainly a better way to do it then the split.join
stuff you have.
I would certainly avoid doing things like:
sendMesg =3D sendMesg.split("lol").join("
because:
lolly
alkylol
amylolysis
angelology
etc.

The font is great though. The rest is implementation details.

Ampersand is & not @.

@ does not really have a name in english, but it is usually just
called "at" these days but originally may have been "each" or "at",
other names that I have seen include "rose", "snail". In french it is
arobase or more commonly "a commercial".
