total number of users across instances

| Hello all,
I need to fetch the total number of users connected to an application,
across it's instances. So by instinct, I was getting
application.clients.length. However, as I could notice, it contains
the number of clients connected in a particular instance, and not
really application-wide.
Is there a way to do it without relying on external resources, such as
a shared object or remoting?
Thanks in advance.

kind of thing.
