| Hello, I had posted this in FlashCoders but was wondering if anybody
here might have an insight...
=20
I have a chat application where people can "hit" and "kiss" each other.
This is done by putting an img tag at the beginning of their statement
in the conversation history. But it seems every now and then the text
area freaks out and just starts tiling on left hand side of the text
area. Does anybody know what causes this and what could fix it? It
doesn't seem to happen to all users=20

Here is a user who it works fine on:

| Chris, this is a bug. People have made hack/components to work around
it. My solution was to create a font. You can see it here:
http://www.karbonized.com/smilies/
http://www.flashcomguru.com/commchat.cfm (stefan's chat app)
.... hit the "chat test" tab to see it in action, or in stefan's app
just start entering smilie codes such as :P :| etc.
It's free to do whatever you want. Get the source files here:
http://www.karbonized.com/smilies/Archive.zip
.... if you have a font editor such as Fontographer, you can import my
base smilie font and create/append a set of your own. I haven't posted
an article on how to use it yet, too busy. But if you tear through the
archive you should easily pick it up.
All the font does is draw multiple characters one on top of the other,
the shapes coupled with colours create the smilies. It's a very simple
solution to a pesky problem and will work in any application or Flash
version that supports htmltext.

> should be aware of
I create my smilies (smilie parts) in Freehand and export them to EPS.
Each shape is exported as an independent EPS otherwise you'll spend
hours trying to tear them apart in Fontographer.
I import those EPS files into Fontographer into an unused character
spot (there are probably ~100 free spots in the smilie set I made).
The character width needs to be set to 0 or 1 (kern is 0). This
effectively removes the spacing you see between characters and removes
the reserved spacing for the character itself. It's what causes each
character to layer themselves one on top of the other as opposed to
side by side. Each letter you type will appear above the previous one,
you won't need to spend anytime thinking about ensuring the images are
layered properly. Just type in the order you want the images to
appear.
The only caveat you'll need to be aware of is colour. If you assign a
colour to a shape you CANNOT assign that same colour again to a
DIFFERENT shape. Doing so will cause a boolean effect whereby the two
shapes will render a *negative* shape from their overlapped shapes.
Just use colour values that are very near each other in the palette and
you'll be fine. Look at my code in the privChat component to see an
example of how I assigned a unique colour to any shape which was not
part of the *base* set. I consider the *base* to be the dark ring
around the 3 yellow circles. The eyes, mouths, horns etc have different
colour assignments.
That's it really. The chat field *must* be htmlText enabled to render
the smilies properly.
If you have any problems let me know. The sample fla supplied with the
font should reveal all secrets...
