The VCS Alternative: Does it stack up?

| Hey folks,
After discovering that the licensing costs for the Flash Com Server was =
ridiculous for anything more than a small windowed, poor quality web cam =
application (I'm sure some of you have nice quality stuff... just =
venting is all!), I thought I would do some more research. See, Dave =
Williams and I found out that I would have to purchase a Flash Com Pro =
license and "rent" a 90 day unlimited license or purchase 21 Pro =
licenses in order to stream my dv cam with a 320x240 window. That is =
absurd!
With that said, the VCS streaming server from http://www.onlinelib.de =
with unlimited bandwidth seams like a good option. However, when I play =
their videos I get major buffer (they are encoded at a very high bitrate =
and quality).
Has anyone looked into this streaming server and come to any solid =
conclusions about it's performance and programmability?
I have also been looking into some Java based applications such as =
http://www.vx30.com and http://www.fluendo.com.

I agree... The licensing for FlashComm is seriously insane compared
to every other solution. We did a few projects with FlashComm where
cross-platform usability was the highest requirement, but Quicktime,
Windows Media and Real were cheaper by several hundred percent, if
not more. Unless Macromedia rethinks their license strategy, we're
not releasing anything else on it.
I know everyone on the list is sick of hearing that, but... I don't
know what options to offer people in similar situations. Per mbps
licensing is not the norm for this type of product.

We tried many times to get anything at all from the VX30 folks. We
couldn't get anyone to give us pricing, demo code, or anything at all
other than what was already on their site.
To add to this, they're the same company who was alleged to take the
open-source mac emulator software PearPC and rebadge it as CherryOS,
claiming they wrote the whole thing themselves. There are also claims
by some that VX30 is largely stolen from the XVid Open Source codec
project.
Here's a page with some links and comments about the company
involving both CherryOS and the VX30/XVID claims. http://
www.engadget.com/entry/1234000323039296/
I'd avoid them, they don't seem like the most stable or ethical
company out there.
