Author FLV Audio to MP3 - Podcasting!
Lou Klepner

2005-09-21, 5:46 pm

Given the release of Flash 8 and the announcement of the new media
server... Has anyone found (or expects to find) a way to convert
Flashcom recorded audio into MP3 files?

It'd be great if we could record audio to the flashcom server,
convert it to MP3 then have it syndicated as a podcast...

Cheers,
- Lou

I have a co-worker (I won't take credit for someone else's work) who has
developed an FLV Parser. It takes an existing FLV and can segment it at an
arbitrary series of millisecond markers. It can also separate the FLV in to
video only and audio only tracks, where the audio is in MP3 format. I think
this could be a solution to the problem below. If there is interest, email
the group and I will see if I can find a way to host the program.
Unfortunately it's command line and Windows-only, but it works very well and
is documented.

I believe the FLIX Engine will allow you to convert FLVs into MP3s.

To all who replied with interest:

Here is a link to the FLV Parser our department created to solve a
particular problem. Its intended use is to convert a large FLV into a series
of shorter FLVs based on a series of millisecond-based timecodes. Using the
-s switch will split the audio and video of the outputted files; the audio
track will be extracted as a series of MP3 files, and the short FLVs
produced will have no audio track at all.

http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/user/jcwrubel/FLVParser.zip

Source code is included - the application was written in C++, so in theory
is portable to other platforms via a recompile (it is Windows-only), but I
haven't tried this.

One more thing - please do not email the author with feature requests or
support issues. He's a graduate student that works on our team and while he
is happy to see his program make an impact, he's not prepared to handle
support. I can handle those types of requests on or off-list.

Jim

Wow James, this is huge, my congrats to Jeff Mattson!
This is free to use in commercial environments?
Can I host a mirror copy of the zip on my flashcom blog?
Does it also split audio that was recorded using the flash player? (i.e.
Nelly Moser)

Congrats again,
Peldi

I have another question: how do you encode to mp3? Don't you have to
license the encoding software from fraunhofer or something? Is this
software 100% legal? Can you tell I know very little about this stuff?

I have another question: how do you encode to mp3? Don't you have to
license the encoding software from fraunhofer or something? Is this
software 100% legal? Can you tell I know very little about this stuff?

To all who replied with interest:

Here is a link to the FLV Parser our department created to solve a
particular problem. Its intended use is to convert a large FLV into a
series
of shorter FLVs based on a series of millisecond-based timecodes. Using
the
-s switch will split the audio and video of the outputted files; the
audio
track will be extracted as a series of MP3 files, and the short FLVs
produced will have no audio track at all.

http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/user/jcwrubel/FLVParser.zip

Source code is included - the application was written in C++, so in
theory
is portable to other platforms via a recompile (it is Windows-only), but
I
haven't tried this.

One more thing - please do not email the author with feature requests or
support issues. He's a graduate student that works on our team and while
he
is happy to see his program make an impact, he's not prepared to handle
support. I can handle those types of requests on or off-list.

Use the -s flag to separate audio from video. For example:

Flvparse.exe -s mybigfile.flv cuefile.txt

That should give you separate audio and video tracks, with the video in FLV
and audio in MP3. If you just want to separate the audio and video but not
create many smaller tracks, put only two values in your cuepoint file. The
first is zero and the second is a millisecond value equal or slightly larger
than the overall length of the original video.

I think I'm doing something wrong. I'm trying to convert a Flashcom
generated mp3 that is 296 kb, it starts creating an mp3 file that increases
in size about a MB a second!

After the MP3 gets to over 100 MB I'm giving up and closing the command
prompt window. I want to convert the entire file, and I have tried different
cue settings, most recently 0 27873. After my first attempt I used flvmdi
metainjector to get the information about my flv file. It said:

<duration>27.872</duration>
<lasttimestamp>27.84</lasttimestamp>
<width>160</width>
<height>120</height>
<videodatarate>0</videodatarate>
<audiodatarate>0</audiodatarate>
<framerate>79.3497536945813</framerate>
<creationdate>unknown</creationdate>
<filesize>302265</filesize>
<videosize>231384</videosize>
<audiosize>66207</audiosize>
<datasize>357</datasize>

It does this every time. What am I doing wrong?

Use the -s flag to separate audio from video. For example:

Flvparse.exe -s mybigfile.flv cuefile.txt

That should give you separate audio and video tracks, with the video in FLV
and audio in MP3. If you just want to separate the audio and video but not
create many smaller tracks, put only two values in your cuepoint file. The
first is zero and the second is a millisecond value equal or slightly larger
than the overall length of the original video.

Strangely, I tried to split the MP3 from the FLV but not possible. How is
this actually done?

I have another question: how do you encode to mp3? Don't you have to license
the encoding software from fraunhofer or something? Is this software 100%
legal? Can you tell I know very little about this stuff?
;)

I'd be interested to find out more about this tool.

Thanks

Hi,

Not totally related, but if you use FLVMDI 2.5, you'll also get audio and
video codec ids, which may help.

Best regards,
