Finally! Mobile Flash for the masses!

| I've been running FlashCom apps (including streaming video) on my pocketPC
based phone for a while now. It does not use FlashLite, but rather a full
on version of Flash 6. (it might be different than 6 for desktops in that
it's been optimized for mobile devices, but other than that, it's the same)
I've been bummed that PalmOS never had support for Flash. This made my
experiments in mobile applications just that. Experiments.
But lo and behold, there was an announcement made Yesterday:

| but that still doesnt mean it will run Flash yet
If its windows mobile 5.0 for pocket PC then it should do, but if its
windows mobile 5.0 for smartphone then there isnt a player available.
Its more likely to be the smartphone version i would have thought.
Still, it holds promise for the future.
cheers
Nick

| Sure - rain on my little parade.
I think it is inevitable that we get *some* sort of flash player on the new
palms, I'm just hoping that since it is windows based it will be a more
robust player than flashlite.
I'm just excited about this technology because I had my first successful
flashcom video app for pocketpc phones working a few weeks ago. It is a
very much scaled down video chat. (phone receives the video and audio, but
only sends audio) Works ok over GPRS, but works great with WiFi.
Nothing wrong with being hopeful.

i did not understand if it's new PalmOs or Windows Mobile 5.
more... is it an official flash player 6 ? Is it an opensource one ?
Can you tell us more ?

| I'm sorry Dario for any miscommunication -=20
=20
Basically I was expressing excitement that we *might* finally get Flash =
onto
the palm phones. And beyond that, I'm hopeful that it will be a robust
version. (since the processors on these newer phones are pretty snappy)
=20
As for the video app I created, it only works with pocketPC phones or
pocketPC PDA's that have microphones. I have only tested it on two =
devices
- both of them iPaq's. My iPAQ phone is one of the really slow ones =
(167mHz
or somewhere in there) and it seems to run streams from flashcom ok with =
the
GPRS modem if I *drastically* cripple the bandwidth. But using the =
WiFi
modem it streams great, and I can throw a larger stream at it.
=20
The day I got it working, I signed in to the app from my desktop and =
pointed
my cam at the TV (CNN) because I was going to be standing in line for a =
few
hours getting my car tags renewed. When I got to the DMV, I just pulled =
up
the URL and started watching CNN. It streamed pretty good with GPRS.
Sound was great - video was a little choppy. The people around me were =
very
curious what I was doing.
=20
It works great for security camera stuff too. Just log in from your =
phone
and get a live view of your house, yard, etc.

| Just for reference, developing for FP6 on iPaqs is a hellish experience,
maybe even more so than developing flashlite apps is. With flashlite you
see the walls, with PPCfp6 you have to feel your way around constantly,
and in most cases you'll be disappointed.
Sometimes it's nice to have limitations

| You are aware that you can watch TV on one of the new nokia 77xx mobile
phones? At the IBC they were showing off this by showing some dutch tv
channels at the mobile hpone. Really nice.

I've developed for iPaqs with the 6 player with heavy actionscript and
had little problems. Probably depends on what specifically you're
trying to do.

Mostly very visual stuff, with a lot of content. It's not as big an
issue unless you're doing a lot of rendering i guess.
