Author A way to test FCS (or FMS) is up

Does anyone know how to do any kind of socket testing to ensure that FCS (or
FMS) is running properly? Ideally I would like to automate a telnet (or RAW
data) script. I have a tool that will do this and notify me of a failure,
but does anyone know of some data I could send to get a response?

I currently just test the port, but at times the port is responsive, but the
applications are not.

Thanks!
Nate
