Hi,

Is most of us probablly already know FlashLite 2 update for Flash 8 for has
been released on http://labs.macromedia.com. I was just curious about the
video-possibilities of FlashLite 2. As from what I have read FlashLite 2
will support video codecs on the specifec handset where it is installed on.
Does this mean only playback and recording with for instance 3gp (using a
flashinterface where flashlite 'talks' with the codec of the specific
handset) or does it also support the ability of FLV-playback and/or
-recording? Can't find anything about that anywhere and I'm just curious
where FlashLite 2 is heading with video. Does anyone know?

Kind regards,

Mark de Jong

Supports 3GP and mp4, FLV's don't work. At least, on my nokia 6680.

Yep, that's correct won't work or the phone has to support it, such a
bummer if you ask me.

Well, if I remind it correctly you could do on-demond encoding with
FMS2, right? I would think you could encode it to 3gp/mpeg at real-time
with some caching for the performance. Hmm, time to look into this.

Weyert,

FMS2 does not support on-demand encoding as far as I know. It just recieves
and sends the video/audiostreams. Encoding is done with the Flashplayer
(Sorenson Spark) or hopefully somewhere in 2006 a software-encoder by Adobe
(could be a 'big' flashplayer or some sort of softare-package), ON2 or
something like that that you can run on a box. I even think that some
hardware-encoding (Viewcast?) could be something for 2006 but I cannot look
into the development of Adobe/ON2/Viewcast. Really hope that happens, would
be awesome!

Weyert,

No you cant't until you have a license to do so from ON2. That is why
ffmpeg will not support encoding to the ON2-codec and Red5 will not also
(well at least nog legal) from what I have understood.

Jesse,

So are you saying it does do remoting? If so are you saying it does
support netconnection? If it does not support remoting, then while it
may be technically possible to access the network, Having to come up
with an entirely different, and inferior, mechanism for access to
remote procedures is not, at least for me, very network app friendly.
I have fairly substantial code libraries that I would not be able to
use without remoting. For me, given the size of my code base, making a
whole new networking infrastructure is a non starter.

Hank

Jesse,

I missed it the first time through.

I see what you did with php.

Of course I am using java, and I dont think it would be quite as easy.
Of course I guess anything can be done if you dedicate the time to it.
But if I am working on that, I am not doing something else that is
probably a higher priority.

Oh well.

I can't believe it will be much harder with Java. I don't know how you
wrote your services. But you might be able
to "decorate" (or some postfiltering to hijack the results) the normal
results into a representation which will nicely for the mobile. For
example a AMF -> XML conversion layer in between ;-)

Its mainly the XML apis.

I have some xml code in my server side services but they were a pain.
php is much more dynamic so I suspect working with xml in php is a
breeze.

I dont know if there are any new apis, but the one I used (I have to
look it up) required call backs and all sorts of stuff that just made
it not a breeze. Of course its totally doable, but for me so much of
my work is about getting into the right "mental space" to do a task. I
am not as young as Jesse who seems to be able to keep everything in
his head all at once. For me I have to look up stuff all the time -
even APIs that I have used before. I just cant remember APIs like I
used to. So it means relearning that and then making sure I am using
this fairly unfamiliar API in the right way.

If I wasnt at least a fairly good architect I think they might just
put me out to pasture.

Regards,
Hank
