Does anyone really understand how google video is working? I am
pretty certain there is not FMS behind them or Adobe would be sending
us press releases weekly. Progressive download with the streaming
benefits....
how how HOW??
<sob>
Oh, and I want there server farm to encode videos for me too. THanks.

| Yeah, i was getting excited about that but hmm. I wonder if google is
using custom meta data for it?
strolls off to find out....
I was also disappointed that the guy from leaveitbehind.com/code has
been quiet for so long.

FWIW, I grabbed a random flv from google, and this was the metadata
bytelength = 9848814

audiodatarate = 64.3113476771141
videodatarate = 170.043166796477

I was looking for another solution that doesn't require custom
metadata to be injected...the flashcomguru solution required the
insertion of keyframes.

| I might be on to something.
I've managed to create a pure php page that silks 2 flv's or more together,
like a playlist. (created during my "hobby time" for Stefan Ritcher.)
Technically there are still bugs in it. I'm not treating the metadata so
typical players would most probably screw up. But the interesting thing is
that I'm actually running threw the file flv tag per tag and simply
re-writing them, but with a new timestamp.
The ideas would be. If you want another solution for seeking that involves
no extra meta-data injection, you'll be probably asking more work from the
server.....(it's a decision to take). So, technically the server could read
the file, till it finds the right timestamp and start spitting from there.
(including the header).
Want such a thing? :P
Sincerely
Fredz./

I was diggin into the googleplayer.swf and see some interesting
things. Lots of math, they seem to be tracking the amount of video
that has been preloaded, and use some logic to do the seek. When you
seek past the area downloaded, it is almost that they open the file
new at that point...you can see it in the progress bar...the dark
grey color (downloaded vid) shifts and begins from the seek to point.
Do you suspect they are using cgi for the file reads? When you hit a
url lik
http://video.google.com/videoplay?d...129751681655830
what do you think videoplay is?

I was on to that a few months ago too, but I gave up on the way because I=

Here's another one:

(unrelated)
You where saying:
"...client side, or very closely approximate it."
Approximating doesn't work for me. That's how I've tried it the first time
that I attempted to seek an FLV. Maybe I did something wrong, and no, I
didn't try using the totaldatarate value to calculate the position, I only
used a percentage of the time to reflect it on the file size (doesn't really
make sense to do so, but hey! that's what testing is all about). Maybe there
is something to do with that!! This idea would need to be revisited.
Cheers

| Yeah, makes perfect sense! But then I had the problem that I don't know yet,
how to do or even if it's possible to, start reading the FLV Tags from an
approximated location that might start in the middle of a frame data...(It
causes my tag reading code to be totally offset and give bad values and
screws up). If there is a sure way of finding out the "start" byte-offset of
the next upcoming flv tag starting at a totally random location, I'm sure
it'll be possible to enhance the seeking time/strain/performance of the
server code.
Any information on people's experiences would be very nice to hear of.
Cheers!
