| Here's essentially the same shot using a DV instead of my iSight.
DV=>iMovie=>.MOV=>FLV.
To tell you the truth, I can't see a lot of quality difference
between this and the iSight. In part, that's due to shooting in
blowing snow. In the iMovie, the DV looks a lot better, but by the
time it's gone through the conversions, it seems to end up in the
same place.

Not to be a total XXX, but for 700 kbit/s the quality is kinda baad for thi=
s
relatively small video size.
I know that the anatomy of this shot pushes the codec to the limits with th=
e
handheld action, zooms, and all the snow falling (however, the spark codec
would have died...so hard)
Guess it might would look haunted by artifacts at lower bitrates anyway.
But honestly to compare webcam vs higher quality cam i think you need to
crawl down to the smaller bandwidths and see how good they hold up.
Try them in different locations and in different light - Both inside and
outside.
It is important to remember that that the color range and noise level varie=
s
a lot camera to camera and that a good lens can make quite a difference.
Try 200kbit or say 300kbit @ 320x240 for both streaming and progressive
dl(this one 2vbr encoded)
One can of course do a lot of filtering before compression...but the
good'n'old sayin 'gigo' still lives:
Garbage In =3D Garbage Out

| Hi S=F8ren,
You're right about that. It was a Q&D just to play around with it. =20
Good light, a tripod, and a slow pan go a long way to making a little =20=
bw look much better. But it was a knock-together in the middle of =20
another project.
Besides, you get to see some snow--I wouldn't imagine you guys get =20
much of that.
Kindest regards,
Bill

| Yeah, I have to say I am surprised that 700kbps with the on2 codec
produced that. Regardless of the factors that might impact quality, it
just seems wierd that it could be that bad.

Hank
