An opinion from Asa, Stefan and Bill

| Hi guys,
It's a lot of time that I want to ask Stefan, Bill and expecially Asa an
opinion about this improvement I found in
FMS2 on-demand streaming:
http://www.progettosinergia.com/fla...blog.htm#031205
The principle is simple:
usually, we must decide a playing buffer deep to satisfy two need:
1) efficient bandwidth fluctuation compensation (this would lead to a longer
buffer)
2) short inizial buffering time (this would lead to a shorter buffer)
But why don't we use a dynamic buffer to satisfy both ?
In the technique I described above, I set an initial buffer lenght and when
the movie starts I set a longer buffer.
In this way, the movie starts quickly to play and then with a longer buffer
I can exploit much more efficiently the
available bandwidth. If the user seek or in the case the bandwith is low and
a rebuffering is needed, we must
re-change to a shorter buffer lenght. The article show simulations, graphs,
and codes.
Recently I have developed an FMS2 e-learning platform with many concurrent
users and I have had
the possibility to view a really good improvement in user experience.
What do you think about it?

| In one sentence: I think it's an excellent approach.

| Fabio,
I read the article and I think it's a brilliant idea. I will try it out as soon as possible.
Thank you,
Bill

| Hi all,
I've been sick so excuse my late reply. This is something that I've
been aware of for a while and it is, in my opinion, the right way to do
very efficient delivery of VOD with good start time and good deep
buffering once the play starts. Pritham mentioned it to me a few years
ago. I think this article you've made Fabio is a very good explanation
of that and I'm glad to see it put to words and pictures. =20
All good from me too,
Asa
