Video --> FLV Encoding in Real Time?
|
|

| Hello All,
I write seeking references and advice about encoding video to FLV files i=
n real time.
I am hoping to convince a client to switch their streaming video from Rea=
l to Flash.
The client is delighted with the post production side. E.g. they like al=
l the interactivity and front-end customization that Flash Player and FMS=
provide.
The next hurdle is video encoding. This is a hurdle in large part becaus=
e the client produces hundreds of hours of video a week, and the video mu=
st be published in streaming format minutes after the video is captured.
Currently, they use Real's "Producer" product, which allows them to
produce high quality, streaming media files from a video capture card in =
real time.
Note that broadcasting the video during encoding is _not_ particularly im=
portant. =20
Time to publication (i.e. to FLV file) is far more important.
Searching through the documentation, list achieves, and the web I've foun=
d two possible solutions, both of which seem to have warts. I outline th=
ese below.
I would greatly appreciate any advice or pointers to documents, products,=
etc.
- Joby
Possible solutions:
A. Build a Flash Player based encoder that records to the FMS.
Concerns: =20
* Limited encoding settings.
* Performance? Reliability? Wrong tool? It seems odd to be using a Fla=
sh
Player client, and a FMS, when the goal is simply to encode the v=
ideo.
B. Build an application similar to Real's Producer using one of On2's SDK=
s, e.g.=20
the "On2 Flix Engine SDK". (http://on2.com/developer/flix-engine-s=
dk/)
Concerns:
* Building and maintaining the Flash encoding application

| Jobby,
I'm not sure this will help, but comcast uses FMS2 for their news =20
feeds-- see http://www.comcast.net

| I think some manufacturers (Digital Rapids, Osprey etc?) sell capture =
cards
that output to flv. What these cards don't do (as far as I know) is send =
the
encoded output directly to FMS.=20
So I guess the time to publishing would be as long as it would take you =
to
upload the flv after the broadcast.

Note: I don't think that any of the cards can do ON2 VP6 yet - but don't
take my word for it. But then again neither can the Flash Player do =
VP6...
