Want to Buy FMS 2 but Adobe Won't Sell It
|
|
| Aaron Roberson 2006-04-20, 6:57 pm |
| I put a call in to Adobe's educational/non-profit arm over two weeks
ago to purchase a license for FMS 2 but I still haven't received a
call back. Don't know any other channel so I thought I would poll the
list. What do I have to do to purchase FMS 2 (for non-profit orgs)?

| I called them a while back asking for this too, and they told me they
couldn't give an educational discount on FMS 2. Does anyone know if they've
changed on this? Do they license an educational version of FMS 2? Thanks

| I have first hand experience in this. Our organization was probably
the last one to buy the educational pricing edition of FMS2. The
cutoff date was February 19th, 2006. We got it literally in the last
fifteen minutes before close of business on that fateful day. I
don't know if Adobe has any plans to loose their stranglehold on the
product, but it sure caused a few problems on our end of it. What
could the reasons be? Hmm....more money for guys in suits who
already have enough?? No that couldn't be it.

| I work for a university and was directed to a reseller for my education purchase of Breeze. My sense is that they are trying to offload non-profit/edu/government sales to channel partners. I am not sure if pricing has changed - I got an education price fo
r Breeze (at least, it was far lower than retail), but not sure if this translates to FMS.
Maybe someone from Adobe knows?

| I'm having a bit of conscience about what I just wrote. I didn't
mean to disrespect anyone working hard at Adobe. I don't know all of
what the details are with FMS and educational pricing, so perhaps I
spoke too soon. Sorry if I put anyone off.

| I don't think you put your foot in your mouth. There have been times when
Adobe/Macromedia has been difficult to work with - to the point of
frustration. Perhaps if it was up to Asa everything would be smooth - but
it's not. We had very similar problems recently. I couldn't for the life of
me get Origin/Edge pricing, but now this problem is fixed. I wear jeans when
I want to.

| For what it's worth we are still waiting to hear about the educational
price for Breeze. Our educational sales rep is having a really difficult
time nailing that down with Adobe. We got one notice that our license
would expire one day and then another notice that it would expire a
month later. I don't know what the educational price for FMS is at all.
I asked our Ed reseller about a month ago (or maybe more?) and haven't
seen a price yet. But I haven't been pushing the FMS license issue. Ive
read that it takes about a year to get over a merger. So I'm trying to
be patient.
My jeans don't fit anymore.
:-(
Yours truly,
-Brian

First off - I'd love to get a better sense of how people are using FMS
in educational settings.=20
Is it in-classroom use? The Free Developer Edition should be fine for
in-classroom use, and the license terms would allow you to do this. If
not, please let me know why not.
Is it distance learning applications?
Or, some completely innovative, Lesser-esque applications?
sales to channel partners
Without having spoken to any sales managers, I think that's likely an
accurate statement, at least for smaller or single license purchases.
For larger license purchases, you should have no problem getting a sales
rep to sit up and beg. Call. I mean, call.
I just checked our channel price lists for US and Canada, and we
definitely do have discounted EDU pricing. If you are talking to a
channel reseller and are having issues, please send me over their info
offlist.
[vbcol=seagreen]
I think we found our new FMS tagline.

I work for a university and was directed to a reseller for my education
purchase of Breeze. My sense is that they are trying to offload
non-profit/edu/government sales to channel partners. I am not sure if
pricing has changed - I got an education price for Breeze (at least, it
was far lower than retail), but not sure if this translates to FMS.
Maybe someone from Adobe knows?

| I think I should unburden my soul here and share with you my FMS
story.... Actually I'm finding this FMS community to be really great
and my hat is off to you guys, notably Asa and Steve, Peldi, Brian,
Stefan, Jake and so on, for your helpfulness and professionalism. We
use FMS in conjunction with Global Change Multimedia, a music, film,
and web development company operating under a non-profit spiritual /
educational organization. We're putting together a video streaming
service which includes on demand music videos, spiritual/educational
teachings as well as live streaming of events, music, lectures etc.
to people all over the world (the Flash player's ubiquity was the
main reason we went for FMS).
Our situation was this: we were planning on buying FMS2 at some
point perhaps 6 months to a year down the road, but we were told by
our reseller (School World in Pittsburgh PA, I think), that come
February 19th 2006, the educational pricing would be ended and then
we'd be charged full price. As a non-profit we had to really scramble
to buy in order to save that thousand dollars which was going to be
tacked on after the 19th. Well, we scrambled and bought it. But not
without some conflicts and a good bit of questioning about the
intentions of Adobe / Macromedia. But Steve just said that there is
indeed educational pricing available. Perhaps it was my reseller who
just got wrong information from somewhere. So it goes.
Anyway, thanks guys for all your hard work.

| Hi Steve,
I'm confused.
You wrote: "The Free Developer Edition should be fine for in-classroom use,"
But the EULA says:
<snip>
"Developer Version" means a version of the Software, so identified, to
be used internally only and solely for the purposes of design,
development and evaluation...
You shall not (A) use the Developer Version for any application
deployment in a live or stand-by production environment or staging
environment, in each case, including, without limitation, in any
environment accessed by application end-users including but not limited
to servers, workstations, kiosks, and mobile computers
</snip>
What did I miss? Do you mean in-classroom use where you are teaching
people how to use FMS??? Was that the context?
Yours truly,
-Brian

You know, if Adobe's sales people don't want to sell FMS to educators
(or can't afford to) you should just give it away!
Read this very recent post for example:
http://brainfrieze.net/weblog.php?id=P580
Or going right to the statement from Google:
http://www.sketchup.com/?section=education
Yes I'm serious - it would be a brilliant competitive move. I would go
back to using FMS in a heartbeat because the financial risk to scaling
out applications with FMS would be gone. Other people in education would
too. It would help FMS grow outside the education space as well because
we would share our FMS code.
But maybe Adobe has other reasons it doesn't want FMS taking off in the
public education sector. I don't know.
I do know that publicly funded educational institutions spend almost
every penny on people. We're not here to make money. We're here to
preserve and extend human culture throughout all the disciplines.
Yours truly,
-Brian

Sales Reps would much rather have you on Breeze than FMS. In fact you ma=
y find that in some cases you may have to send them a powerpoint presenta=
tion of why you need FMS over Breeze. Breeze is a marketed product that =
is well packaged for easy sales, FMS is probably a little more difficult =
to gage especially with the changes that have taken place.

| I know, but we already pay for Breeze and expect to continue to pay for
Breeze. Everyone here loves it. It works well does many of the things we
need it to... etc. I'm not interested in dumping Breeze for a home-grown
Breeze-lite/FMS solution. There are other things we can do with FMS but
I don't dare start down that path at its current price. Of course my
nightmare is that the cost of Breeze goes through the roof. That would
be the final straw.
