Hi Dave,

In risking a maelstrom of opinions to the contrary, let me nominate
the Creative Pro by Creative Labs. Here are the features I like:

1. Microphone not built into the camera--lets me put the camera away
from the mic for a long shot. (Comes w/ Lapel Mic)
2. Given sufficient light, it's got a great picture. Not my favorite
low-light cam, but it's ok.
3. Sips bandwidth. This is my favorite feature. BW hogs tend to have
more jerks, jumps and stalls.
4. Screen clamp or stand up base.
5. Includes telephoto software
6. Manual focus

--Downside--
Doesn't work on Macs

Other cameras I have:

1. Logitech Orbit. Best picture and I like the fact that I can move
it around remotely. Connected to my Mac, it seems to drop dead on a
regular basis and gobbles up BW. Built in mic works fine.

2. iSight. Convenient and the autofocus works well. I've never been
able to get the iSight built-in mic to work right. Good with low
light, eats up a lot of BW.

3. iBot. (Orange Micro went out of business.) Great camera picture
with IEEE1394. No mic. Works w/ Macs & PC.

4. Logitech 4000. Great camera. Flexible, tough, and good quality
picture, built-in mic. Eats up more BW than my Creative Pro, though.
Works well on Macs.

5. Logitech Portable. Good for 75ft. Terrible non-focus lens--sort of
fun for walking around giving remote tours with FMS. Built-in mic.
(Way over-priced).

6. No-names from China. I've got a couple of WebCams -- one from
DateZone and another MyForum2 -- both work fine. Both with external
mics/headsets. Good lighting important.

7. Pyro 1394. Best video I've ever seen on a Webcam. No mic, but this
camera is great if you can still find them. Every now and then
they'll pop up on Ebay -- IEEE 1394.

i think it depends strongly on which use you need to do.
I mean... for simple videoconferencing (face recording) i think one of
the best cameras you can buy is the
Creative Live Ultra.
It has the wide angle.
it has VERY high quality video (bright and crisp)
it uses quite less bandwidth when used with flash player encoding if
compared to logitech cameras.
Manual focus.
software face tracking (not good if you ask me).

If you consider the low price tag... well.. it's almost perfect.

It also opens the door to making video conferencing as anonymous as
chartrooms. For example, if someone was online at midnight and didn't
like the way they looked at that moment, they could use an avatar, etc.
I remember watching the Jetsons when I was a kid and the videophone rang
and Mrs. Jetson was wearing curlers. She picked up a mask of her at her
best and held it in front of the camera when she took the call.=20

Actually, this kind of functionality could be faked on the Flash client
without using facial recognition. Instead of a Web cam video stream the
user could simply send data about changed expressions. The lips could
move according to mic activity and the user could click on a thumbnail
of their avatar's expression at that moment. It wouldn't be as easy or
"natural" as the Logitech Webcam avatar, though, it probably would be
more like Space Ghost as a SitePal character. I'm imagining Rick Moranis
appearing in a chat room as a lip-synching Brad Pitt... Too funny.
