Author Breeze Player and Screen Sharing?
Yi-Lei Wu

2006-07-07, 1:11 am

Hi list,

Lately I discovered a website that is FMS 2.0 backed, and used Breeze Player
as its frontend to accomplish Screen Sharing. The author claims that he is
purely using the Flash capabilities, and he came in contact with me.

He wishes to know if there is any legal issues for doing so. What licenses
will he need for doing something like this?

Personally I would like to know how he did it too... but he wouldn't tell
me. He said that he found the technique on the web, and this screen sharing
function came with FMS 2.0.

p.s. if you guys would like to see it in action. post a reply and i'll post
the URL.

Best regards,

Peter Wu

Yes... a link would be nice.

It's a shame the author doesn't want to share what he's come up with, and
quite honestly, it bugs me a little. I can understand not making source
files available, but I don't really see why he wouldn't want to share the
technique with the rest of us, especially considering that it's a
technique he found from another source.

On the note of legality, if he's incorporating breeze player into his
application, I think it would be sensible to assume there are some legal
issues. Since Adobe insists on keeping the best functionality for their
own products (I'll save that rant for another day), I doubt they would
allow it to happen without some heavy-duty license fees.

Meh... nuts to him. Google did just as well.

n =3D new System.Product("breezeaddin5x0");
//n.download(); <- To download the breeze addin, which seems to take fore=
ver
n.launch();
cam =3D Camera.get("Screen");
v.attachVideo(cam);

I'm still looking for more info, but at the moment it seems to only work
if the .swf is opened with the breeze addin (as opposed to opening it in
the regular flashplayer). More when I find it....

Hi,

Unfortunately he deleted the URL after I informed him of possible legal
problems :-(

But Jay, you are on the right track. I found that piece of code as well, and
yes, it only works in Breeze player. But the funny thing is that for the
backend, he claimed that he uses normal FMS 2.0... not the "modified" one
that came with Breeze.

I also asked him if he knows anything about VOIP, and he said that it's
missing a DLL that only exists in Breeze's FMS....

He didn't give me his codes or tell me how to do it, but he did hint me that
he used "hidden" Flash functions...

Hi,

Well... I can at least describe what I experienced when I went to the URL.
First, there is a swf... then it asks me to install the Breeze component
player. I clicked yes, then Breeze player got installed, and it opens up a
Breeze player window. Then in it there is a customized interface (totally
NOT Breeze), just a colored background and a window that has a title saying
screen share. Then I saw his portion of the screen.

That's about it...

Best regards,

Peter Wu

Hi,

Got another info from him... it won't work in FCS... only works in FMS.

I can't comment on the screenshare part but forcing a Breeze Player install
via a normal Flash swf is nothing new (although not widely publicised for
obvious reasons).
Once you have forced a Breeze Player install on your users it sounds
plausible to then leverage its features for your app. If this was legally
unproblematic then we could all have a screenshare solution by tomorrow -
but I doubt it is although maybe it is. At the end of the day you're only
leveraging features that appear to have been added by the manufacturer but
that aren't documented. Fact of the matter is that screensharing works only
with the Breeze Player. Best check what the legal terms surrounding this
player are.

Remember also the Flash FCS docs did at some stage (still?) contain
(somewhat hidden) AS syntax needed to start a screenshare broadcast. I think
it was something like Camera.get("screen");
