Ok Jesse,
I wasn't discouraged and gave FDS a try. It installed fine, the integrated
JRUN server started up fine, I was able to view a page at
localhost:8700/samples

BUT - none of the sample apps would run. Each one would throw a nullpointer
exception. I gave up at that point LOL

Are you using the latest versions of everything? There are big differences
between the various betas of the flex2 framework and the player. So if, for
example the sample app is from final code but either your player or your
framework is not, things wont work.

Hank

Thanks Hank,
Latest install of everything.
I've also installed the CF 7.0.2 updater. However when I point Eclipse at
the ZIP archive which should supposedly install the CF support for Eclipse
it fails and complains that no software update is available. I copied the
files manually into Eclipse and this seems to work. However Eclipse now
complains about a missing 'feature.xml in zip' when I try a software update.

I can't put my finger on it but there seem to be some rough edges to this.
Inconsistencies also when the installer refers to Eclipse versions, once it
mentions Eclipse 3.1 but then it obviously needs 3.2 for some features.

It just feels a bit hit and miss to me. I know that the nuts and bolts of
Flex2 work fine but I am much more interested in the Remote Data Features.
Having some CF knowledge I'd like to leverage that - but then I see the
Release notes
http://www.adobe.com/support/docume...2/cf702_release
notes.html and I don't know if I should even bother. There's so much listed
here that will probably have me pull my hair out and I feel a bit
demotivated now.

Thoughts?

Stefan

Well FDS worked like a charm for me but I was not using coldfusion. But that
brings up an interesting point. FDS and coldfusion are really separate
things I think. If you are using cold fusion and just want to do remoting, I
dont think you need FDS. If you want to do some of the cool new FDS
messaging/data sync stuff, coldfusion doesnt really play a part in that. So
I am a bit confused. I was responding to the issue of getting FDS up and
running and you made a comment about coldfusion. Is there some connection
between these two in your installation or in how you would expect to work?

Regards,
Hank

Yeah sorry Hank I understand.
They are indeed 2 separate things. Problem is that FDS wouldn't work for me
(or the samples at least) but the CF stuff sort of installed ok. Well the CF
part did but the FlexBuilder updates had some hickups.

Sorry about the confusion, I'm just moaning :-)

Hi Hank,
After following the link Stefan posted I finally ended up here:

http://download.macromedia.com/pub/..._with_flex2.pdf

So it seems the 7.0.2 Coldfusion release was all about bunding FDS into
Coldfusion and it looks like all the features of FDS are in there in one
way or another. Mind you, I'm not sure I have the mental energy to dig
into it now that I've actually found the doc...
Cheers,
-Brian

Yeah kind of - the data push stuff is only available with CF Enterprise. But
you do get the updated Remoting with the normal CF.
Not sure if anyone has tried the CF Remoting Wizards yet but wow - I managed
to get the Artist sample stuff working:
http://cfreport.org/index.cfm/2006/...n--Flex-Builder
I worked through part 1 (Dean went a bit fast at times).

After setting up the queries using the SQL Manager, the wizard creates MXML
and tons of CFC code for you. Scary in a way yet cool in another.
Cool because the app actually worked - scary because I know I couldn't have
written it from scratch.

Not sure if they use Cairngorm but the CF (and AS) code is definitely
following MVC and a best practices approach.

This reminds me of the time when I laid eye on the FCS commponent framework
for the first time... Iceberg ahead.

Stefan

Hmmm... If thats the case then it seems to me lots of people should be using
cf instead of flex because I would be that unless you are doing Java stuff,
cf is much easier. Of course I have never used it, but from what people say
it sounds like it is easier than java.

Regards,
Hank.
