(FCS 1.5) unpredictable playback speed in streamed

On several occations (though not reliably enough to reproduce on demand)
i've had the first flv in a playlist stream just fine, but following
files in the list have played at higher speed, resulting in pitched-up
sound and all manner of involentary hilarity. Anyone know of a way to
safeguard against this? I'm assuming it's buffer related.
