| Wanted to know will I run into any major issues if I use underscores in the
cm naming convention. CCM_PUB_01

| Yes you will. You should use valid DNS names for hostnames of CM
servers. This means no special characters and it has to start with a
letter.

| underscore was not a valid character in the original dns rfc. you
will get mixed interoperability. safest option is to not use underscore.

| interestingly enough, the underscore is heavily used in the active directory world. we made a conscious decision in our DNS team to allow these, because, well, without it, some active directory applications wouldn't work. our unix guru did some research and basically, as wes mentioned, strictly speaking it's not supported, but people have moved towards it. so as long as your internal DNS servers support it, then you should be ok. i think the danger is when you try to create dns entries with underscores that will hit the outside world.

| Here is one of the issues you might run into with using an underscore
for the CCM name:

There are a few others I have seen; Voicemail port wizard failing and
problems with updating Gateway information. Of course when these
problems occur there is a TAC case that is created and it usually takes
a awhile for us to notice the URL has an underscore. Most of the
problems can be worked around by using the IP Address instead of the
hostname in the URL. Also, an underscore is not supported by cisco
TAC.
