Hi, I am trying to get calls coming in a remote MGCP gateway to use g729r8 across WAN instead of g729br8 when a 6608 MTP Transcoder is being used. The regions in CCM are set to use G729 between them, and I have tried setting the CCM service parameter to
strip G729 Annex B from codec to true and reset the MGCP gateway and 6608 to no effect. Silence suppression parameters are set to false also.

All the documentation on the 6608 transcoding I read saids G711, G729, or G723 but it doesn't mention which G729 flavors it supports. The documents for IOS transcoders list the different flavors, but there is also codec configuration you can do on the rou
ter/gateway and tell it which to use unlike the 6608.

Any know how to kill the VAD / silence suppression on g729 with this setup?

Thanks, Erick

I can't rememebr but some codec should have VAD built-in...

Here is some summary...

High Complexity: G.729, G729 Annex-B & Medium Complexity: G.729A, G.729A
Annex-B
G.729 is a high complexity algorithm, and G.729A (also known as G.729
Annex-A) is a medium complexity variant of G.729 with slightly lower voice
quality. All platforms that support G.729 also support G.729A.

On cisco IOS gateways, the variant to use (G.729 or G.729A) is related to
the codec complexity configuration on the voice card. It does not show up
explicitly in the cisco IOS command line interface (CLI) codec choice. For
example, the CLI does not show g729ar8 ("a" code) as a codec option.
However, if the voice-card is defined as medium-complexity, then the g729r8
option is the G.729A codec.

Note: For the MC3810, in cisco IOS Software releases earlier than 12.0.7XK,
there is an explicit CLI choice between twenty-four channels of G.729A or
twelve channels of G.729.

G.729 Annex-B is a high complexity algorithm, and G.729A Annex-B is a medium
complexity variant of G.729 Annex-B with slightly lower voice quality. The
difference between the G.729 and G.729 Annex-B codec is that the G.729
Annex-B codec provides built-in IETF voice activity detection (VAD) and
Comfort Noise Generation (CNG).

These G.729 codec combinations interoperate:

a.. G.729 and G.729A

b.. G.729 and G.729

c.. G.729A and G.729A

d.. G.729 Annex-B and G.729A Annex-B

e.. G.729 Annex-B and G.729 Annex-B

f.. G.729A Annex-B and G.729A Annex-B

Note: There is no explicit way to configure G.729A on the Cisco
2600/3600/VG-200 NM-1V and NM-2V (voice network module) since these voice
modules do not support the "codec complexity" configuration supported on the
NM-HDV (High Density Voice Network Module). However, if a G.729A call is set
up by another endpoint that terminates on the NM-1V/2V, the call is
successfully connected.

There is also some bug related to 6608... and workaround is which you
already have done (strip annex B).
http://www.ciscotaccc.com/kaidara-a...?case=K07922481

also, there is some silence suppression parameters in CCM which should be
diasabled...

Yes. All that is set properly (see first email).

I was just wondering if anyone has seen this, or knows how to get the calls to use g729r8 instead of g729br8 because there doesn't appear to be any more knobs to set in CCM or on the 6608 to influence which to use. So maybe this is what you get with the 6
608 perhaps. Just looking for a doc or something to back that up, because the multiple docs I have read on cisco.com say the 6608 can do G729 for transcoding, but it doesn't mention which flavor. However, the docs on IOS transcoders mention which flavors
of G729 are supported on various devices but the 6608 isn't IOS.

Is the workaround to thie scenario to make the remote site 2600XM series gateway, H.323 instead of MGCP so we can use the codec-class and specify whats allowed?

i have both H323 and MGCP gateways... but I preffer H323 regarding codec
issues...
still, CM settings for striping annex B are not fixed. It just means that
annex B wont be used if any other option is available but if it is the only
codec supported by one of end devices then it WILL BE used...
So, you never metioned your end devices... maybe those are the ones who does
not support other codecs?
