Which protocol, G.711 or G.729 would be best for usage on a satellite connection with close to
1 second round trip delay. Would the G.711 be more resilent to lost packets, when a packet is
lost I lose more info on the G.729?

You'll probably want to test this yourself, but although you'd think G.711
would hold up better, I've found G.729a actually seems to give better
results. I don't know whether it's because it's contending for less
bandwidth, or what, but it does seem to sound clearer.

It's what we're using on the INOC-DBA network, and we've got hundreds of
phones on the ends of satellite links in the Pacific, central Asia, and
Africa.
