I have a user who is having a random issue. He has an IP phone at his house
behind a hardware firewall. On occasion he said the speakerphone would cut
out and that there was barely any sound coming out, but if he picked up the
receiver he could hear fine. We thought it was a VPN issue, but the same
thing just happened to his office phone. Has anyone seen this before?

| Do you see anything odd in CCM traces?
What about the phone status page?
Do you see any abnormalities on the diagnostic page
for the phone? [question mark button twice during
conversation]
Any dropped packets?

in the traces. I can hear him talking into the mic, but the speaker is not
working on his end.

| What kind of speakerphone? I had to troubleshoot a similar issue. The
problem was the default gain and attenuation setting of the particular
speaker phone (Polycom) were not compatible with the cisco AS5400. I had to
make adjustments on the Polycom so the center clipper values matched better.
Otherwise, it's "choppy audio".

| Make sure his hand set is not coming off hook slightly, i.e. if he bumps
the desk or something. If you start speakerphone w/ the handset down,
and then if the handset lifts, speakerphone will become disabled but the
call will still be connected. He won't hear anything since audio is now
flowing from the handset, but you will likely still hear him since the
handset will pick him up as he talks. It's easy enough to verify, when
it happens, ask him if his speakerphone button goes dark (i.e., isn't
lit anymore).

| We had a similar issue. Which firmware is currently installed on the
phone? We encountered this behavior after updating a CCM 4.3 with the
newest service release (4.2(3)SR2b) which also contained a devicepack
newer than 4.2(3.20).
In our lab we could reproduce this behavior. The following occurred in
conjunction with the pickup function. If the user presses the pickup
button and immediately lifts the headset, he will not hear the other
side speaking, but the other party hears loud and clear. If the user
presses the pickup button and waits for the display to come ready, means
showing all information, the phone is ringing for one time and he now
lifts the headset everything works fine. The behavior of the phone is
completely different with an older firmware version.
Best regards
