[Documentation] OpenDS has some nice docs
|

| Hiya,
SUN's OpenDS has lots of nice documents, project plans and a great road
map but little or no code behind the publicized features. It looks very
professionally structured even though the code is not very mature.
Their marketing is solid.
ApacheDS may be better designed, more mature, and may much more
functionality/features but it is not represented nor documented properly.
We should look into having a similar rich set of docs along with an
aggressive road map or matrix. Notice they do not say what they
currently support, they just say they will support some things in the
future. I think we have an obligation to disclose both.
This is not a competition but I recently heard (from a reliable source)
that SUN management behind OpenDS is openly telling people at
conferences that they are going to surpass ApacheDS very soon. And
according to this source, they state one of their clear advantages is
the fact that they have better organization, and more importantly better
documentation and an incredible road map.
I think we can learn from their professional approach to documentation.

I plan to finish a first complete version of the Basic User's Guide
before Christmas. Christine and I currently work on it, and I think we
will be able to do the job within that time line.
But it would be nice to have some support with grammar, style and tone,
as the both of us normally speak the language of Goethe. Anybody who
masters Bronte style and volunteers for a review?
Even more important would be to lend Ersin a hand with the Advanced
User's guide, which includes key features like partition/interceptor
programming. It would be nice if Ersin would spare some time here to
invest it in content publishing technology.
Greetings from Frankfurt/Main (Hometown of Goethe),
Stefan

That's awesome news Stefan & Christine.

As everyone on this list knows my grammar and spelling is pretty bad but
I will take a few passes in reviewing your stuff for sure. I might
learn a thing or two I've already forgotten about ApacheDS .
What I would like to do is complete a few things right now to get Norval
and Emmanuel in gear with schema subsystem redesign. That way they can
get to work on somethings. Then I can research some replication issues
to get Mitosis working.
By that time I think it is right before Xmas. Then I can review a good
chunk of the work you've put out there. Is this ok? I can start
reviewing now but my context switching from English mode to Java mode is
a bit expensive .

Yep! Hey perhaps Ersin it might be faster for you to transpose some of
the workshop presentation and examples to a tutorial in the advanced
section.
I'm specifically talking about this material here:

Well, they have documentation, but I cannot say that they are really
informative documents. What they call the "Architecture Guide"
explains almost nothing for me. We are going good with documentation,
especially with Stefan's and Christine's efforts and we'll be in a
good position in a few months.
BTW, I liked their installation wizard.

I will try my best to complete the Advanced User's Guide but what a
pity I do not have enough time these days.

I am actually thinking it as Embedder's Guide but it may evolve by
time from the AUG.
My focus will be on the Admin Model, Collective Attributes, Authorization.
