Please help us find a logo for ApacheDS:

http://wiki.apache.org/directory/Ap...rverLogoContest

We're actually pretty late with this but the traditional one is not so
bad so we can change the logo at any time.

Thanks,
Alex

Alex, I think we need a deadline for submissions. I would like to
forward this to some designers I know, and they probably need a schedule
to plan their creativity . I assume it is not necessary to have a new
logo already up and running with the 1.0 release.

And what about adding a link to former Logo contests like this one:

http://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/...OX/Logo+Contest

Greetings,
Stefan

Designers? That's great! I've been trying to ping a few artistic
friends of mine but without any luck.

Right I agree. A logo can be added at any time or changed for that
matter.

Sorry what was your intention for doing this? Did you want to show how
the contest was conducted with some idea of how the logos would look?

Thanks,
Alex

The girls I had in mind are screen designers. They do not know what a
Logo contest at Apache looks like (they probably even don't know, what
Apache is, and definitely do not know, what a directory server is).

The current wiki page does not contain any requirements (Logo sizes,
different usages etc). My idea was to give them a hint without writing
down detailed requirements. Designers without.ASF background will
hopefully have interesting new ideas (no feather etc.). May be linking
to an existing Logo contest like the G one may reduce creativity. So
forget my idea.

Greetings, Stefan

Just a few thoughts on the logo contest:

I've been drooling over these KDE Icons (LGPL):

http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php?content=45576

I was going to attach some of the ones that I think
would work well in a logo, but I think the email will
bounce back - so I'll just use the names:

kppp.png: this is the apple .net icon, but it has
another icon layed over it.

I thought this might be cool, but with the kfm
file cabinet layed over instead...

kfm.png
or
file-manager.png

....since directories and file-manager's have a litte
bit in common...

There's a green one like that somewhere else that will
probably work better ...

There's also an icon for Internet Connection Tools:

Internet Connection Tools.png

It's pretty sweet. It's got a wire with a male jack
coming out of it and it's the world with the apple net
glowing stuff on it.

I'll try to attach that one and see if it goes
through:

Anyways - kde-look is a great resource in case any of
us wanted to hunt for some icons to give the designers
a general idea.

There's also one under the filesystems folder called:
folder_html.png

that's a globe in front with a file folder in the
back...

Just a few ideas....

Cheers,
- Ole

No no you had a good idea I was just wondering where it came from. More
curious than anything else.

Alex

Cool I love these icons myself but we may have issues with using LGPL
icons. If I remember correctly a GUI for Geronimo had to remove LGPL
icons from the neuvola icon library or something like that.

I'd suspect we might have similar problems/issues with LGPL icons.

Oh,

that's interesting. Maybe there were some GPL icons
mixed in.

According to the kde-crew
as long as the LGPL license is in
the same directory as the icons,
whatever includes them is safe. Naturally
if derivatives are created, those are
LGPL too, but other than that
they should be very safe to use.

Ofcoarse there are lots of GPL icons
on kde-look as well, and if those
are wowen in, all of ADS becomes GPL....

whooopseee...

"Um - What - SCO is sueing apache? But they
did'nt even start the icon set?

They don't care they just want the money.

Oh - Ok..."

Cheers,
- Ole

I have`two questions from a designer whom I asked to create a logo
proposal for us.

Are we looking for a logo for the concrete server solution (Apache
Directory Server) or for the project (Apache Directory) as a whole? Or both?

And she asked when we need her proposal. I think it is reasonable to
give her at least 4 weeks. As long as we have not decided for a logo, we
can use the traditional feather. Any objection, Alex?

I think we're fine with the existing project logo we have for the TLP.
If there are others interested in changing that we can discuss that.

I was thinking of a logo particularly for ApacheDS.

Sounds good to me.
