That's right : when you set the "search Base" to the empty string, the "Search" button is not active. It should be, if the scope is Object and if the filter is (ObjectClass=*).
How do you get the other error?
Last point : you must select an entry to be able to do a search. It would be better if we can launch a search from the menu even if no partition is selected.
