My thanks to Ivor and all the contributors, so far, to what may seem to
you all as elementary stuff.

So that I am completely sure of the setup, can I just check this? If I
sign up to sipgate, then move house and change ISP in the process:

- does my sipgate account come with me?
- in the intervening period - no house, no ISP - can I log in to my
sipgate account from any PC, anywhere in the country to retrieve my
voicemail?

Thank you for your understanding :-)

Yes on all counts - not only anywhere in the country but anywhere in the
world with internet access.

Yes, it is nothing to do with your ISP, you can access it worldwide.

Yes. Anywhere in the world come to that. Or you can have your voicemail
messages sent to you as email attachments.

Whilst I can not comment specifically on Sipgate, I have tried Voipfone, =

Voiptalk and Gradwell, and found that Gradwell's service is second to non=
e.

Yes, it costs =A34 per month, but then again, you get what you pay for.=20
The service is very reliable; voicemail is delivered instantly to your=20
email account as a wav file, call forwarding works superbly. All in all=20
a great service. NB I have no relationship to gradwell.net except being=20
an extremely satisfied customer.

I also used a softphone plugged into my laptop whilst on holiday in=20
Mexico, and worked superbly; now I'm quite sure that most VOIP services=20
will work from abroad, but I thought that I'd share my personal experienc=
e.

I too use all of these

Gradwell is always flawless, I don't think I can remember ever having a
problem with Gradwell and my lines terminate in Canada

As to the others, for the most part, they all perform within
expectations except for Voipfone which I seemed to get 1000s of
registration timeouts which do not show with the others

If I were adding lines for business and wanted to be sure of service
levels, I would definitely choose Gradwell, followed by VoipTalk

These are of course my personal preferences, others mileage may vary
