About £30 for Netgear router/ata, branded as vonage, so I assume it's
locked to them

Had it about a month, quality is excellent, routing/diversion options are v.
flexible, service is reliable so far, website works a treat, their suport is
pretty good as well. The £30 router with 2 phone ports from Staples is
locked to Vonage, but it works v. well and plugged into my Wireless Linksys
router without any problems.

So how much pr month does Vonage cost if you buy your own router .

Beware, that ata is locked to Vonage. You can buy the same Linksys PAP2 from
the likes of broabandbuyer.co.uk for ~£35.
Why pay monthly rental to Vonage, when you can have FREE calls to anywhere
civilised from Voipbuster ?
OK, the service isn't totally reliable, but for FREE I can put up with
little inconvenience.

IMO the price of reliability is well worth 9.99 month.
Also you don't pay the 16.99 vonage activation fee if you buy the vonage
router.

Have you got a link to Staples web site with this product or do you
need to go in store?
Have you got a link for the router so I can read up on technical
details?
Do you connect the Staples router to your existing router or vice
versa?
TIA

STBI, but it's a Linksys RT31P2 Router - Cable/DSL Router (not suitable
for ADSL unless you have an Ethernet Modem, but will work with an NTL ot
Blueyonder service)), with 3 Port Switch and two RJ11 Sockets. It has
the usual Linksys router functions, such as DHCP, NAT etc.. This side of
things looks identical to my Linky BEFSR41 router so I don't see any
issues with this.
It's locked to Vonage and gives no access to the phone set-up until you
register with them and as I haven't registered I've no idea what
services are available. Reading the blurb, however, it sounds like a
standard Vonage 9.99ukp per month Vonage service.
> Do you connect the Staples router to your existing router or vice
> versa?
I contacted Vonage about this and they reckon their service would work
behind NAT, so I think it will work if you connect it to an existing
router. You cannot turn NAT off on the router tho' so any devices you
connect to the LAN ports will be on a different subnet to any existing
one you have, I believe.
I haven't tried installing the one I bought, so I haven't tried it out
(I'm intending taking it back to Staples tomorrow) mainly because I
would have liked the opportunity to try out the phone service before
signing up for ten quid a month on my CC but this appears not to be
possible unfortunately. I have no doubt that it would work very well as
a router.

Get this..
I went down to Staples tonight to buy one, for a trial, and got two for
the price of one.
Two for £29.99.
I'm sending one to my Brother in Law in Malaysia, so we can talk Vonage
to Vonage for free. Better than Skype as you don't need a PC on all time.

You have to go to a Staples store.
You connect the router from Staples into your existing Broadband router.
The instructions that come with it I found bollocks. However, after two
hours I did it 'my way' and it worked fine.

Sick to the teeth of Sipgate. Had half duplex problems for weeks.

But remember, the Vonage £9.99/month package includes unlimited free
calls to local and national geographic numbers, to get that with BT
you'd be paying £25.50/month - a bit more than another few pence...

The £ 7+ package from Just Dial VOIP gives me 24/7 usage to all local
and national numbers the only thing that is making me consider Vonage
is that JD cannot off me a local geo number but after reading part of
their T&C's which someone has posted here this afternoon I am starting
to think again. I have a strong aversion to 12 month contracts even BT
only hold you to 3 months on a re connection .

Yes, JD-VoIP's local code range is still a bit patchy, I ended up with a
Wolverhampton number, but Vonage's local code range doesn't cover the
whole country yet either.
One thing to be aware of with JD-VoIP is their complicated set-up needs
settings that some ATAs can't do (see my post about JD-VoIP and the
Linksys PAP2-NA). The other thing to be aware of is JD-VoIP's parent
company is Centrica, who also own British Gas, One.Tel and the AA (if
they haven't sold it off yet).
The thing to be aware of with Vonage, apart from the disconnection fee,
is their routers and ATAs are locked to their service.
No, I haven't found the perfect solution yet either... ;-)

Someone posted here or to another group a way of unlocking the Vonage

I can't get my POTS and VoIP line to communicate.
Here's what I was trying to do:
1) Allow calls to be make and receive on both the POTS and VoIP line.
2) To be able to dial into to the VoIP unit, using either the POTS line
or VoIP line and make outgoing calls. Thereby allowing me to make
international calls from my mobile by dialling my home number or VoIP
number.
3) As both lines would be receiving calls from anyone, I need a minimum
or CLI authentication from a pre-defined list of numbers, together with
the ability for PIN protection.

You won't with a 2000, it only has FXS (phone) ports, there is no POTS
interface.

Like I said, you can't do that with the SPA-2000, it doesn't have an FXO
(POTS) interface, it has two FXS (phone) sockets. What you need for that
is the SPA-3000 which has one of each and allows you to connect the two.
However, there are numerous callthrough services allowing international
calls from mobile inclusive minutes, depending on the destination. I use
Pre-Dial on 07973 832825 or 07976 827878 to call the US.

That I'm not sure on, as I've never used a 3000 but it seems to me that a
PC based application such as Asterisk would be more suited to your needs.
Any Asterisk users advise..?

Hi
This can be accomplished many ways with *, Personally I have a few numbers
that either when answered ask for a password, The password is compared
against the entry in the database assigned to that CLI, if incorrectly
entered or CLI is not in the database the call is dropped, if matched the
caller is passed to an IVR to make further calls or listen to voicemail etc.
also calls from from certain voip suppliers which have a certain cli are
handled different to normal calls from that supplier.
Finally all calls on my main BT line are parsed through a blacklist and if a
match is made the call is passed to an IVR and the caller has to press 5 to
get passed to a phone.

Most likely Magrathea, they seem to provide most of them. If you know a
number on the system, look it up here:

What a useful link. :-)
I don't have a Vonage geographic number to look up, but their 0800
number was supplied by Gamma Telecom, who also seem to have a good
selection of local geographic area code ranges too...

It's £10.99 from OneTel,
and £0.00 from Voipbuster, after you have paid 1 Euro ;-)

More like £20.98 if you take OneTel line rental and unlimited geographic
calls.

If you have cable your ADSL service isn't necessarily bundled with a
phone line nowadays. :-)
However, if you have cable your TV service will probably be bundled with
a phone service instead. :-(
It's about time Sky brought out a package that didn't require a fixed
phone line for the first year; that might encourage the cablecos to
think about more solus TV packages. (Sky's argument is that the phone
line is necessary for chargeable interactive services, which I'm sure
many of us probably wouldn't want to use anyway...)

I don't have ADSL, I have cable, and no fixed line phone, so I only pay
for my broadband.

I have NTL broadband, and I do not have their TV service. I only have their
telephone service because I was offered it free for 12 months, but that will
be going when the free period ends.

Other way round with us we got the free TV with the phone line from
Telewest both are going on Friday just keeping the broadband has I
think it is more stable than ADSL not had one bit of trouble with it
in 12 months . When we had BT & ADSL we had nothing but trouble
of one kind or another .

Never had a problem here with BT line and Wanadoo or whatever they're
calling themselves this week. Had ADSL for over 2 years and only had one
or two minor outages which were quickly fixed. A lot of reported problems
have been with the cheapo USB modems that they supply. Get a router and
Ethernet connections and the problems go away.
The main problem with cable I believe is the upload speed, I'm told that
it's only 128k on some systems.

A friend of ours had been with Freeserve from the start using dial up
then she upgraded to adsl and has been using the speed touch usb with
no problems at all . She has just this morning migrated to Pipex due
to Wantodo wanting to keep ripping her off billing wise so she has now
moved and said sod em originally she was with that other useless phone
company called Localhell and their equally useless ISP like we where.

I've just today tried the Fritz!Box Fon and that does seem to have
callthrough capability, although I haven't tried it as yet. There are
options to allow forwarding based on a PIN number or the CLI of the
incoming call, so it might do what the OP wants.

Just remind me which "star services" you get with BT free!

Alarm call and advice of duration/charge of last call, IIRC. Been a while
since I've used either so can't be 100% sure.

Alarm Calls aren't free,
Charge Advice is.

I know the alarm calls aren't free, I meant that you don't have to
subscribe to it to get it, it's there automatically. Badly worded I
suppose.
