It's a Jabberd, you will be able to connect to it using any
configureable jabber client.

A popular one (although there are many) is GAIM (which will connect to
icq and AOL too).

http://gaim.sourceforge.net

Not too sure about the VOIP aspect of it though.

Time to update maybe, but then again, maybe you are better off with
windows 98, at least it is not being targeted by virus writers now.

My second computer uses win98, It will run Xp fine, but with windows 98
it moves like hell, so it is better for the security cameras.

There are hardware limitations for some operating systems. I once
tried putting XP on an old computer - just XP nothing else. It took 10
minutes to boot up. I know that this is an extreme case but it does
illustrate the point.

I gave it a go the other day with a friend who I normally voice chat to on
skype. Its as good quality as skype and just as simple to use.

At present it uses their own voice protocol (I assume), but once sip support
comes in, it will be interesting to see if they finally crack the p2p sip
possibilities, which are discussed on voxilla. Almost every IM will probably
be able to voice chat with each other soon, which would be good, though 3/4
of the world seems to be on msn, and still not use voice chat much.

My second computer is a AMD 400Mhz and yes it is slower with XP on and
booting up is a bit of a pain, but once it is running it works ok. the
security program I use, is a bit thursty on CPU and memory, so Win 98 is
the best thing to use. I would use win95, apart from the fact that USB
and win95 do not work. Well they do sometimes.

Waste of time for me.

The installation of Google Talk Plus Google Desktop trashed large
parts of my system and it's taken me 2 days to sort out by deleting
them.

Not for me.

Same here but I was up and running again in ninety minutes mush

I had a quick look, it seems very similar to Yahoo Messenger to me, which
I already have, so I see no need for another one.

No problems here, I did not keep it on, because I use Trillian, which
does all the messenger type software I use, AIm, MSN and yahoo.

But as I said, no problems with the software.

Maybe you should get Norton's ghost, it will allow you to back up your
system onto another hard drive or even DVD. It is the only Norton
product I use, but it is well worth the money.

Agreed, the latest version (9.0) works from within Windows as well and
doesn't require a DOS boot floppy. I back up to an external USB drive and
it saved my bacon last week when I had a catastrophic hard drive failure.
I lost a couple of days' emails but nothing serious.

I back up to a external usb drive as well. But all my emails,
newsgroups, and any other data that can change minute by minute are
stored on a internal 20GB drive, that is also backed up now and again,
but mostly if the system goes belly up it is normally the C drive.

when I restore the system drive with Norton, all the data is still on
the 20GB drive and windows just carry on as normal.
