What router should I buy?
|
|
|
| I'm having all sorts of problems... and I think I've managed to pin
down the problem to my rubbish router: a Belkin one.
I want to buy a new one.
I'd like some recommendations.
I've seen Draytek quoted in a few places.
Linksys has been mentioned as well.
I need:
- Port forwading capability.
- What else do I need?
Thanks.

Im using a Belkin router with Sipgate and apart from not being able to use
STUN it works fine. Have you enabled uPNP on the router?

You need QoS - Quality of service. That ensures that your router
gives priority to your voip call over that, say, of a file download.
This means that the sound quality of your call is maintained.

My recommendation is the AVM Fritz!Box Fon, a little more expensive at
£119 but can handle up to 10 SIP accounts from multiple providers. Ideal
if you like to use one provider for outgoing and another for incoming. See

Ahoy there shipmate... can you hear me...???
And I thought I was alone on this island called Belkin Rubbish Router.
Thanks!!
I read up about UPnP...
And it sounds exactly like what was needed!!
It was disabled... and now I've enabled it.
But erm... still no joy. : (
What are your settings?
Let me know.
Thanks.

Are there dial plans with this ATA to enable certain calls to be routed
through different SIP Accounts? Or is there some other way to decide
which account to use?

Normally you'd have the two primary accounts you want to dial out on
routed to the two phone sockets, but yes, you can set up dialling rules
which route different numbers different ways, for example I have it set to
route all 0870 and mobile calls via the PSTN line, as it's cheaper than
Sipgate for these. I also route 999 calls the same way for obvious
reasons. I've just put in prefixes like 0870 but you could put in complete
numbers if you wanted to.
I believe it's possible to use a code like *11# or something similar to
send a call via a particular route but I've not been able to get it to
work reliably. I don't know if it's me or the box, the documentation is
rather sketchy, I've emailed the manufacturers but not had a reply yet.
When I do I'll let you know.
Incidentally, this device is the only one I know of that can handle an
ISDN line as well as an analogue PSTN line for the fixed line connection.
Obviously we don't have ADSL over ISDN as they do in Germany and in any
case the hardware as well as the firmware is different for that, but if
you had an ISDN line as well as ADSL on another line you could use the
ISDN line as the fixed line connection if you wanted.

Not sure whether that answers the question or not. I was trying to
establish whether the Fritz!Box could be used like the Sipura3000 which
I have, but I know yours isn't that model.
So, I understand from what you say that there are 2 primary SIP accounts
and you can route via PSTN if you want. But you stated that you can have
up to 10 SIP accounts. So how do you use the other 8; is it by call
routing in a dial plan?
And do I understand correctly that you only receive SIP calls on the 2
primary accounts?
Thanks for any info and help.

No my Sipura is the 2000 which only has FXS ports, no FXO (PSTN).

Like I said, there are codes to dial if you want to route a call over a
specific account other than the 2 primary ones, but I haven't been able to
do it, but it may be me reading the instructions wrong or it may be a bug,
I don't know yet. It's probably me..!
> And do I understand correctly that you only receive SIP

No you can set the phone ports to ring on any or all of the accounts for
incoming calls. I have my 2 Sipgate numbers ring one phone each, but my
FWD account rings them both together, that way I know which one it is.
It's not perfect, but all in all it's an excellent device IMO. My Sipura
plugs into the LAN port via the 8 port switch I have connected and works
fine without any ports needing to be forwarded, giving me another 2 phone
ports. One of those is my speaking clock, the other is a backdoor into the
PABX which gives me an internal dial tone for testing purposes.

Thanks for the info. I'll stick with my Sipura3000 for now.

thanks for the reply.
i'm using x-lite.
what is an ata?
so... let me get this right: u just turned UPnP and made no other
changes?
didn't you have to make entries to setup virtual servers?
let me know thanks.

ata=analogue telephone adapter i.e. something you plug into your router that
lets you use a normal phone for VOIP. I've just tried Xlite from my laptop
and can dial my work voicemail and hear things ok. I havent set up any
virtual servers or forwarded any ports. X-Lite can be very tempermental
though and theres lots of settings to get wrong - try downloading SJPhone as
an alternative and see if you can get that to work.
