Remote access to trixbox

OK, so I've built a Trixbox out of old PC bits, loaded the software, built
trunks and extensions and it all works! I set it up using freepbx and I can
make internal and external calls in both directions, no problem. I also have
an analogue phone on the router (ST716WL) which is connected to voipfone and
doesn't use the asterisk and it works fine.
What I can't do is get an extension to register from another site. On the
Speedtouch I set up a new "game" for port forwarding and set it to forward
ports 5060 - 5090 to the asterisk. I also set up forwarding for a "web
server" to the asterisk so that I could access Freepbx remotely. Neither has
worked, if I ping or tracert my IP address it just times out - anyone got
any ideas? I have 1 fixed IP at the moment but I can have up to 8 free.
Would it be a better idea to get another IP address for the asterisk?
TIA

Yes. Go for it. You'll save yourself bother trying to work out which bit of
kit is at fault when things go wrong. I suggest you make sure the web
interface is only available via HTTPS and firewall everything you don't
need with iptables.

Can you create a VPN between the two sites? ALL your problems will then
disappear.

Not really, I'm trying to set up a phone and get it working before sending
it out to someone in Spain.

Why do you think?

So the user can be sure he is connecting to the correct web interface?
To encrypt the interaction with the web control panel if he is
connecting over the internet?
Why?

Hadn't thought of that, but yes, there's another reason.

So it's protected from casual eavesdropping, innit? I would have thought
that was obvious. Notwithstanding the fact that the SIP and RTP won't be
encrypted, my personal opinion that where a security measure is relatively
simple to implement, then it's worthwhile doing. All this is probably
academic anyway, as the OP has indicated he only wants a remote phone
hanging off it, not to be able to manage it remotely.

If you can run OpenVPN at your server end, you can use a Snom370 which
can run an OpenVPN client.

You have to enable access to the GUI from external IPs. By default you
can access Trixbox web interfaces only from IPs in its same network
range.
Don't remember exactly how to do that, but there's something to do
somewhere in the "amportal.conf" file. Caveat emptor!
Look for infos on www.voip-info.org, it's a goldmine of tips & tricks.
