voipcheap.co.uk vs voipchap.com

| I am currently using the .co.uk service as they provided free sms texts,
but charged 1p per min for uk landline calls wheresas the .com chaged
for texts but calls were free (up to 300 min per week). Now I notice that
they have now started charging 3p for texts, so the .com service is
cheaper overall.
How come the same company has such different rates?

Hi,
I think the idea is, across countless (at least 15+), "same company" brands,
to have multiple combinations of free and paid for destinations and
services, to best cover all angles and make most revenue from a given
customer base (as well as offering some other ancillary benefits - marketing
performance evaluation, r&d, testing and rolling out of new and different
services, etc.).
Best wishes,

I switched making o/g calls from .co.uk to .com some time ago
when I noticed the cheaper UK mobile rates.
I don't profess to understand the Betamax business model, I'm
just glad they are on the scene.

What you need to do is to compare their tarifs ... each time before you
decide to top-up your account, and then change to the cheaper version.
Use the following website to compare their rates: http://backsla.sh/betamax

Actually, I only use voipcheap.com there is no need to check against any
tarrifs as the mobile calls I make ensure everything else is free
including calls from home which use the same account as I use for the
business.
I have never understood why anyone would use any other betamax service
than voipcheap.com never seems to be anything to beat it even with the
19% VAT added

I've just had a look at voipcheap.com. I see they're only giving 90 days
inclusive calls before a new credit top up is required. I thought they all
gave 120 days now?

I find that my 10 euros credit bottoms out at about 90 days because of
the chargable mobile calls I make.

Fairy nuff then! A tight wad like me can stretch his €10 (£8.75 at the last
count) for ever and a day, so I'll sit tight with voipstunt for now.
Incidentally, I see voipraider has a 90 day limit as well. I *could* go
through the lot to compare, but it's time for a beer, so perhaps later...

No.
that's 5 hours a week.
My partner might only have a longish call once or twice a week so we
never top out the 5 hours. Plus... something on their site says
something about 300 mins per unique IP address which would then give us
5 hours for the shop and 5 hours at home.. well that's how it seems as I
have never been charged for anything except Mobile calls.
Plus, for at least 6 months or so when I top up the account it tops out
at around 360 free days. currently showing
"Freedays remaining:322 (info)" so it looks like their server is
accumulating un-used minutes with every top up to a maximum of 360 days.
Actusally, having just logged in again, it gives the option of getting
an incoming number for Euro 1.00 ..... which is actually an 056 number
so not that hot.
but OK for voipcheap to voipcheap calls I am guessing, though I doubt
I'll ever use it.
Be interested to know if anyone else has the same account sharing
multiple IP addresses that could confirm the 5 hour / week / ip address
theory.
Cheers

If you want a free geographic incoming number and your SIP device
supports two accounts just get one from Sipgate or Orbtalk
When I used voipcheap.CO.UK they gave me a great "once seen
never forgotten" number
0161 700 0XXX (and the XXX is pretty memorable too)
the odd thing is I didn't tell them I wanted an 0161, I think
that's what they were giving everyone at the time and most
people round here would associate 0161 7 with North Manchester
which is exactly where I am. I keep a few pence credit in the account
in the hope that I don't lose the number.
I don't think the "unique IP address" works like that, I think it might be
more like if you have two accounts calling from the same IP
you only get 300min between them, maybe someone who knows
can confirm?

I was not refering to check voipcheap.com against any other (landline or
mobile tariffs
But the site http://backsla.sh/betamax is comparing Voipcheap.com tarrifs
against other Betamax clones, which are all different
Depending your calling profile, you may find cheaper than voipcheap.com

Ah, I see.
Having just had a look, I realise what you mean.
I could be getting mobile calls at 6.5 rather than 8 Euro cents per
minute if I went with justvoip.com
Looks like I may have to give it a go once current credit is all but
used up.
Thanks for your advice Philippe.

And it appears to me that you can only authenticate mobile numbers for
outgoing CLI purposes. I use Voipdiscount which allows me to set a
landline number as well. It suits my purposes, and although calls to
mobiles are more expensive I make so few that I'm better off with a
120-day validity.

How odd- I have just received an email from voipcheap.co.uk telling me
that I can now send free sms to UK numbers!!!

I got it too.
According to the website
FREE SMS is available for users with Freedays
** VoipCheap reserves the right after a certain amount of SMS to start
charging sms for the default rate.
No idea how much "a certain amount" is or what the "default rate" is for
free SMS destinations
I think I am going to jump ship and join Pete on justvoip.com when my credit
expires

Justvoip does not appear to work with an ATA eg SPA3102.
Some people have reported success over on MoneySavingExpert, com, but so far
I have been unable to get it to work.
I have "sip.justvoip.com" as the proxy and the appropriate User ID and
Password.
It shows as registered but all I get is a single tone when I dial out.
Any help gratefully received

Thanks guys. It's just that I downloaded the client to have a look at it
and it says under the Caller ID tab: "Currently only mobile numbers can
be verified."
Before I invest anything in a second Betamax service, how does it work?
For example. on Voipdiscount you get an SMS containing a code to verify
mobile numbers and an online code to verify landlines. Is Voipcheap the
same?

They claim that, but I successfully authenticated my Tesco Internet Phone
number for caller ID just by following the steps in their softphone
application.
